Can someone offer advise as too the procedure for booking berths and entering Gunwarf Quay? I seem to remember reading that I need to talk to Ports H M to ensure safe passage past the wightlink ferry port and into G Warf prior to arrival. I know its going to be busy so I want to reserve a berth as I would like to stop there for one night before moving to our next location.

Weekend looks great, lets hope it stays as good as predicted. Who else is going to be around Port Solent / Beaulieu & Bucklers Hard?

I'm glad I was an inney for the winter, done more hours than last year and its only mid April, roll on summer!!

regards
Kevin

You enter Portsmouth harbour and keep to the port of the big bouy, near the ferry pontoon on the Gosport side, think you are supposed to radio Portsmouth QHM, get all fenders and warps ready over by gosport, then cross straight into G'Wharf, from my experience of gunwharf, will be plenty of space but lumpy over night, instructions for entering harbour should be in your almanac, do check, QHM can get funny.

Funny ain't the word. They certainly didn't like our night navigation exercise, not long after 9-11. All those flashing blue lights didn't do anything for our night vision.

They were a little sheepish once we'd pointed out they been informed in writing, and confirmed by phone. Still had a big boat shadowing us for the next hour

Note that they've got a new patrol boat which started service a month or two back, so watch the speed limits carefully this year.

I was there a week or so ago. Local regs require you call QHM on ch 11 before crossing the deep water channel at Ballast (the "big buoy"). Gunwharf say visitors have to book ahead - not sure of phone number but they're on ch 80 so could call them up before you cross to see if they have space.

Chap at Gunwharf said QHM is intending to apply regs strictly this year!!! Break the rules and they'll lock you up in Blockhouse Fort, perhaps.

Your probably better off ringing Gunwharf on your mobile as you enter the harbour. They seem to ignore vhf calls on ch 80.
Enter the harbour via the small boat channel on the west of the harbour entrance
and leave Ballast buoy to starboard. Call "QHM" on ch 11 and ask for permission
to cross from ballast buoy to gunwharf. they may tell you to hold until large
Naval or commercial traffic has passed. Dont pass to close to any Naval ships.

They don't it is just that they have a feeble little handheld VHF and you can't make them out until you are at the Ballast or crossing the channel.
Last Week asked the QHM if we could enter Fountain lake to view the dockyard, he said that we were not allowed within 50yds of a naval ship. If you bashed the Ark Royal you would probably bankrupt your insurance company/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Agree with others, we always call QHM from the Gosport side and ask to cross. It is better to wait till there's no traffic visible, so you get a "yes" answer

As to going close to naval vessels, this is being strictly enforced in the current climate I think. I cut a bit close to one on the Clyde last week (it was moored up) and the navy patrol boat told me to back off.
