Hello New to me boat has a strainer like the one shown in the picture.Boat is back on the water now but I forgot to clean the strainer before launching.I have the tool that opens the strainer but would like to turn it in the correct direction first time to
avoid damage. So would that be clockwise or anti?Any other issues about cleaning the strainer would be appreciated. It is below
the water line so I will be turning off the seacock before opening the strainer. Thanks in advance.guidi.jpg

I have removed and replaced the top on mine without noticing anything special about it, so I would be surprised if it were not standard anti-clockwise to open.

My impression was also that the top is pretty robust - mine was on VERY tight when I got the boat, but I never felt I was likely to be damaging it by putting some heft on it via the provided plastic spanner-like tool. I think the tool might give up before the top.

I can't remember, either, anything particularly significant about the strainer. I think it just lifts out, once the top is off, for cleaning/inspection.

As LittleSister says, it will be anti-clockwise to open.

The tops to most of these filters always seem to be too tight so when you put it back use plenty of silicon grease and just nip it up by hand.

It sounds like it's worth having a strap wrench on board in case the special tool decides to snap. I had to use the strap wrench on both my Vetus strainers the first time I removed the tops. Since that first time I remove them by hand.

Thanks for the info guys.Judging by some of the things I've seen on this new to me boat it might have been a long time
since this strainer was opened and my concern is that the whole body of it may move and cause a leak below as I use the special tool to open it. I'll use a strap wrench to support the body and keep that on board too.Had a mechanic on board when I was on the hard and using a bucket of water the engine seemed to pump a lot water. Now back on the water it doesn't seem to pump much which is why I want to open the strainer.
