Guadiana in Flood

We were there at the end of 2008. There had been a similar flood a few years before when water was released from dams on both sides of the river. I remember there was a mark on one of the riverside properties showing how high the water rose. A lot of boats were washed down river and ended up in the fields.

The dam is on the stbd side going up. It is joint with Portugal and Spain.

Well, it's been horrific. Many boats washed downstream, the pontoons at Guerreros and Larenjeiras destroyed, lots of the moorings at Larenjeiras gone, one guy dead and several boats sunk or beyond salvage. Riverside bars destroyed, boats washed way up into fields. Several of our friends have been affected, one lost their boat (sunk), one had his boat swept from its mooring when another yacht came down on the flood and collided with it, other friends spent six days on continuous anchor watch and couldn't get ashore for over a week. They didn't have the option of going downriver to Ayamonte or VRSA because the water was too high for them to get under the bridge.

It beat all previous floods. The dam at Pomerao is only one of those contributing to the floods. Guadiana is a very long river, and dams hundreds of klicks upstream in Spain have been full to overflowing and discharging into the river.

Levels are getting back to nearer normal now, but it's a tragedy for the Guadiana yachting community, one that will take a long time to recover from.
