I have lost a massive amount of oil from the S'board engine. It appears (and I hope) that it is coming from one of the seals in the oil cooler, but it is in the vicinity of the Head Gasket which has oil all over it (but so does everything else!). I have never had a head gasket go on anything before, is it possible to lose 18+litres of oil in a few seconds from the H/G? There is no oil in the coolant and the engine was delivering normal power and had been given a 1 minute run at WOT about 15 mins before this happened. Whatever it is has gone with a bang!!
I am happy to accept bets on the final cost to try and recoup the cost/forums/images/icons/mad.gif/forums/images/icons/mad.gif/forums/images/icons/mad.gif Can anybody recommend a good vilevo engineer that could sort it out, I don't have time at the moment to sort it myself and it will take 2 weeks if I do it but they can probably do it in a few hours.
I am really cross because this sort of leak (explosion) just shouldn't happen on any engine, especially a medium speed diesel with less than a 1000 hours.

No, it isnt. The turbo is about 5 feet away and the pipe originates right down in the heart of the engine about 4 feet away. Thanks though.
I have a piccy of the oily area but I cant seem to downsize it at the moment.

If its pissing oil out that fast, why not fill it up with oil and start the engine with the hatch open. Run it at 2000rpm, surely you'll see where its pissing out from then??

I have done that but only for a few secs. I was going to do it properly today but I was too late to buy another 10litres of oil. It is holding the oil pressure at Idle so I am hoping it is the seals. 2000 RPM is my normal cruising speed, it would rapidly coat the entire boat with oil if I did that/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

As you know, I've also got 63P's; starboard engine on my boat has remote oil filter and according to Peters the supply or return pipe can very occasionally burst - just had mine both changed as one of em was leaking. They're thich rubber wrapped in a metal spiral sheath. If it did burst, I guess you'd get a massive leak in view of oil pressures.
Sorry for the delay in posting as haven't had time to catch up on forum recently but hope it helps
Good Luck
Roger
