Tried the plastic shell version once.
All fine untill replacement time came and I tried to push it out to replace it in the normal way. It broke up and I had megga trouble in getting the remains out. Have always been careful to use brass shells since.

Phenolic-shell bearings have been around for about 30 years. They are definitely an advantage when you have a recessed cutless holder and have to cut out the bearing every time you need to change it.
Can only see disadvantages with GRP backing.
Nitrile rubber is the standard bearing material for cutless bearings - hence VicS's cryptic remark - but I'm sure you knew that.
PS Yes it is cutless, the other thing is a sort of sword.

Why choose rubber as a bearing material when advanced composites can perform better?
You then don't need press fit or sleeved bearings, just a simple tube of composite which can be slid into place by hand.

Only if you have a stainless stern tube and don't want to introduce another metal. If you have a GRP or bronze housing stick with the metal shell.
