Well I have had exactley the same problem. Assuming his mast was hollow there was simply not enough purrchase. I sorted mine by making a bronze eye below a Y shaped bronze strapping that is over a foot long and goes round the mast. The eye is also angled with the load direction. Done by classic marine - so yes, it will cost a fortune if he sorts it properly!
