Greta Thunberg is crossing the Atlantic on Vagabond.

I wonder if Vagabond would have happily crossed at the same time of year, if the crew had the choice?

They have already been given an Outremer to make Youtube videos, so must be under heavy contractual obligation, right down to the smallest details of clothing, language, political correctness and even facial expressions which are permitted.

Ferrying clickbait-magnets like Thunberg, with Vagabond's financial team eagerly cosying up with the $$ Eco-machine, is a PR's wet dream but a weather router's worst nightmare.

Crossing the ocean in winter, (with the risks to themselves, passengers, and any potential rescuers), merely to gain more Youtube hits for their financial backers, opens up a large, jagged tin of ethical worms and is probably unprecedented in the history of seafaring.


This trip is unquestionably a commercial and political venture. However, it seems to be masquerading as a jolly jape by private individuals.
The implications need thinking through at the very least, and let's hope they haven't bitten off more than they can chew.

Just a touch of hyperbole, there. You might like to glance at Hum Barton’s book Atlantic Adventurers for some Victorian examples of publicity stunt crossings from West to East. And wasn’t there a film about Donald Crowhurst?

This is in a completely different league, billions of viewers and dollars are hanging on it. The ventures you mention are Pooh-stick games in comparison. So, unprecedented.

(The Hum Barton book sounds good though :encouragement: )

Considering in their latest video she is complaining about her baby and the trip up to New York, hard work etc and Im not surprised, Riley doing much of the sailing by the looks of it. Then they set off on a trip at not the best time of the year!
Her latest Instagram, not me looking by the way, the Greta is sick as is mum, 25 knots, running south, hohum! I suspect the drive for fame is going to cost them?
Also fo those who follow them, like I do, it always amazed me with her, to me, dippy eating habits and pseudo save the world shite that she uses throwaway nappies for the child!

You've shown some interest in ocean weather - perfect opportunity to get some practice - download opencpn plus the weather plugins , grib,weatherfax,pilot charts & weather router. See what makes sense and what they do. :cool:

Quite astonishing reading those who pontificate about details of contracts etc whom I am sure are not privy to such details , did anyone see the ( sailing ) Nandi video before it was withdrawn last night , not sure if they bit off a bit more with their ostralayan humor than they could deal with in opening up a platform for some very jaundiced right wing venomous opinions, or did corporate YouTube decide it was bad for business , I am just wondering if it will do their image more damage than that of LaVag

Saw they had put something up, was going to watch today, what happened? Precis?
 
I saw it , it was ( supposedly ostralayan humour) rather a large dig ( later in post replies denied ) at LaVag and the ( understandably ) wisdom ( or lack of ) of entering the NA with etc at this time of year , whither intentionally or not ( I hope not ) they provided a platform for some very poisonous posts from some very nasty people , both towards LaVag and Greta herself . Eventually turning into a very nasty situation .

Can't even escape the endless culture war even between bikini lifestyle brand sailing youtube channels. What we need now is a freeze frame analysis of Erik Aanderaa's runic tattoos cross referenced with the SPLC hate symbol database by Sailing Uma.

I didn't watch the Nandji video, just saw the first minute and meant to watch it later as it looked as though it would be amusing. They are a lovely couple, and I am sure there was absolutely no malice aforethought in their decision to have a little fun with the news. Bonita and Yoshi are a lovely couple, but they do not have the advantage of frequenting places like the YBW Lounge so are not aware of the large numbers of venomous right wing bawbags who frequent the internet these days.

I don't think either Nandji or la Vagabonde will be harmed by this, but it may make them a little more worldly-wise - if you think that is a good thing well, it is up to you, personally I think it is a shame.

As to the trip being a publicity stunt - one thing is for sure - if the trip goes smoothly Outremer will do very well out of it.
