Wilfully incorrect use of ensigns isn't clever, it isn't smart and it isn't a statement of any kind except just pure bad manners. If you're the sort of person who thinks its acceptable or somehow impressive to be openly rude and insulting in public that's just sad.

It is probably technically illegal too but as someone else said, so what? Who gives a stuff about the law either?

Chinita - your Irish pal may well be speaking for the 95% of Irish people who are perfectly amiable. But the IRA and supporters were never more than a very small minority yet still capable of creating havoc. Its the same argument we have about Muslim terrorists being a small part of the Muslim population.

But I still wouldnt walk through parts of Oldham of a saturday night wearing a dog collar and I wouldnt have a red ensign on my boat in NornIron either. Most probably nothing at all would happen but why take a risk?

We had a new one below so after changing and profuse apologies everything reverted to the usual smiles and we got our fuel .

My Irish pal is one of those currently wearing a Red Duster on his boat moored in Crosshaven. His son lives in Wales and the boat is registered to that address.

How do the 5% IRA and supporters distinguish between his Red duster and mine?

Edit: Just done a quick Google and can't find any reference or report of a British leisure vessel being targeted anywhere in the island of Ireland. It was a brief search - perhaps you know better?

No it isnt legal but who cares? Personally I think I might fly the stars and stripes going to NornIron - anything from the UK or Eire is just too dodgy. You never know what some drunken idiot staggering back from the bar is likely to do.

Can't see where you get that impression from, I've been going to Ireland on holiday at least twice a year for the past few years and love the place. In fact, if I couldn't live in Scotland I'd very happily settle in Donegal.
I'm not so keen on the north, but have never felt anything but welcome there.

It is illegal, like doing 32 in a 30 mph zone. Crime of the century....

And you are correct about being a statement and if it upsets you and folk like you then it sort of makes it all worthwhile.

Didn't realise that pride in your country made you a third world country particularly one that has currently one of the strongest economies in the world and is seriously thinking about whether it wants to position itself with the EU. Suggest you take your xenophobic attitudes into the tunnel in Switzerland where you were found and back into them.

I regularly go over to Southern Ireland and fly the red duster, I have the Irish flag as a courtesy. I have never had anybody show any form of distain towards me or the boat whilst cruising and I think anybody who says they have should explain where and why. I find S Ireland a very welcoming place to cruise, in certain circumstances more so than .......

That said...... Northern Ireland has thrown up a few comments about Brits but the less said about that the better.

Surely it is either 'a relationship between flag waving and under development' or 'an inverse relationship between flag waving and development'.

I stand to be corrected.

If you are saying that flag waving is a sign of under development I notice that the Stars and Stripes is frequently waved. I would call the USA a lot of things - but not under developed.

Go to Sweden and you will see flags flown outside many houses. Are the Swedes under developed?

Plenty of UK flags flown on yachts in the Republic without adverse comment as stated elseware.
The O P refered to a single flag representing Ireland before independance, now thats likly to cause offence in either part of Ireland.
Its a free country, maybe it might go unnoticed but I wouldn,t chance it.
