Greeks and the law

A bit like Spain...between two stools european correctness and latin sense..........proper grotty bars where a glass of wine and a bocadillo would serve well for dinner now we have BiG mACS.......

No I'm not. If I see people smoking in a bar or taverna I'll go somewhere else.

Love the Greeks? yea well another very good reason for a Union of Commonwealth Countries :D

Anyways, a Question to those that love the Greeks; are you going to pay the 'boat /yacht tax that's likely to be imposed on visiting boats /yachts? :D

Have you maybe missed all the "discussion" that has taken place already? The general view seems to be to capitulate Chamberlain style.

As of 2010, Greece was the country with the highest rate of tobacco consumption (more than 40%) in the European Union. Since older legislation was not very efficient a new, more comprehensive law was passed. Effective from 1 September 2010, this law prohibits smoking and consumption of tobacco products by other means, in all work-places, transport stations, taxis and passenger ships (in trains, buses and airplanes smoking is already prohibited), as well as in all enclosed public places including restaurants, night clubs, etc., without any exception. Casinos and bars bigger than 300 m2 were given eight months to apply the law.[54] Enforcement of the law is reportedly weak, with most owners of coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants continuing to allow smoking.

Interestingly enough nobody smokes in buses and trains. Apparently the law that passed some 40 years ago seemed reasonable and was accepted. OTOH messing with Greeks' fun can be a tough task.
Besides, as more often than not eating and drinking takes place in open air where smoking ban seems ridiculous, shifting from smoking to non-smoking (for the odd cold day) is very difficult.

But Italians (at least northern Italians) took to it immediately. True most of the restaurants have a covered terrace that, by being outside, gives smokers a place to eat and smoke while those who wish to keep clear from polluted air, sit inside. That's fine for most of the year with warm termperatures, something else when they sink to sub-zero ones as they do in the winter.
