Hi, My yard (In Greece) have quoted €5200 to

1. Mask all free board areas for protection.
2. Remove all thru hull fittings below water line area.
3. Remove bow thruster propeller and protect its drive unit.
4. Remove all antifouling layers and old primers, using mud blasting technique (no
damage done to the gel coat or sensitive areas of the hull)
5. Clean the hull area with fresh water.
6. Prepare surface for primer application (hull).
7. Apply two coats of HPE (High Build Epoxy Primer).
8. Apply four coats of PE epoxy primer.
9. Apply two coats of self-polishing antifouling, and a third coat on the water line
area.
10. Remove all masking materials and clean.

on my Moody 44

Ive never had the A/F stripped to this extent before (I usually just slap on a bit myself each year) so have no idea if this is a good price or not.
Seems expensive but theres quite a lot of work

What do the panel think ?
Thanks
Steve

BTW - I had noticed that they've not included putting the skin fittings back :)

Its not exactly just a paint strip back. They have quoted for a full strip back and epoxy finish prior to re antifouling, ie a full osmosis protection job. For that amount of work it does not seem bad at all.

You could cut back if you don't want to epoxy, just mudblast, dont remove any skin fittings, coat of primer, then antifoul.

I presume you are still in Agmar yard? We are out there 5th March to 10th March so can look at anything.

I paid the same for 40 foot cat in Croatia. Your wetted area probably greater. Preparation back to gel coat and 4 coats of Coppercoat resin.

No work done on thru' hulls though.

On that basis, your quote looks reasonable unless Greece is very different to Croatia.

Thanks for (quick) feedback chaps

Chris - thanks for the offer. Looks like we will miss each other again but I'll bear it in mind that you're there in a few weeks time.
We are out 1st week April to prep the boat the on our way south in May

Regards
Steve

If you are spending that kind of money why not go the extra mile and Coppercoat? The price sounds good for all that prep and the incremental additional cost of using Coppercoat will be relatively small.

Worth considering ...
I might just try and trade-in the Ultrasonic AF system I fitted 2 years ago for some Coppercoat :)

Has the hull been checked for any damp/osmosis areas?
You would not want them to come along after blasting and tell you they wont be able to do the epoxy as the hull is too damp and then hit you with a larger bill to rectify that as well.IMHO

I'm no expert but doesn't a full osmosis job include removal of the gel coat. Is there any point in putting hi build epoxy on top of polyester gel coat?
You should clarify exactly what they're doing to the gel coat. Which Greek yard are you in btw?

tri ... yes thats what I thought also.
either way its more than I really require - Im happy to keep Canopus's bottom clean by diving under with a scraper/brush every few weeks but I did want to start from a reasonable A/F base as we are doing a long trip this Spring and scrubbing opportunities will be restricted
Last time I checked she was in Agmar Marine at the top end of Leros :)

Its only worth applying epoxy if the hull layup is dry in which case it will act as an osmosis inhibitor. I would then opt for the coppercoat route and replace skin fittings with non-metallic versions . A way of assessing the cost is to ask how many days labour the job is going to take. You should be able to get an idea about local labour rates then add cost of materials + yard profit

Steve. Agmar labour rates are 45 to 55 euros per hour.

I am paying about half that price in Gouvia, Corfu for the work detailed below, about 1/3 materials 2/3 labour and equipment using blasting technique. If I had opted for removal by hand it would have halved labour and equipment but the operative is confident he can take the flaking and crazing layers down progressively to the primer. Does not think removal of hull fittings necessary.
Our yacht is a Centurion 40, bought new in 2004 and this is the first time to remove all old antifoul. The hull has never been epoxied. Once a satisfactory layer of prime coat is uncovered moisture levels will be checked. Provided ok the intention is one coat primer, one coat hard antifoul, one coat self polishing antifoul.
Price includes repositioning of props and finishing treatment.
Pinetops

I would second the warning to check pricing for filling and fairing. If the blasting gets down to the gel coat, which is presumably the whole point, then it is quite likely to create loads of small voids which are then a pain to refill.

Thankfully I am in a part of the world where a full bottom job costs around 400 quid !
Whats wrong with the through hulls ?
Last time I hauled out in a yard near Venice sandblasting, new through hulls, gellshield and new stearing gear +++ came to about 4k Euro includung 4 months on the hard.. The times must be changing..
