Great Day's Sailing

What a hoot, sounds like you all had real fun !!!!!

i suggest it be incorporated into the non-existant ECF calendar and run as a turn up with what you have and have a bash type of event. I for one would need (lots of ) help with the various ratings/rules etc but would love to have a go as and when .....

I have posed the question on scuttlebutt and it seems you can't use IRCs with PYs. One poster suggests converting your IRCs to PYs with a formula. Using a PY of 1014, they have arrived at an IRC of 8 something. Presumably 1014 is the handicap for spinnaker, furly wurly and stuff as Burnham Week gave me handicaps of 1090-1070. The formula is on scuttlebutt if you want to give it a try.

I had a play with the formula, both using it to get an IRC for BR and to get PY for CdG and Cayenne. It is complicated by the fact that Keith has an SYH Classics handicap not an IRC but I have both which gives some comparison. The SYH handicap is slightly lower than the IRC for me. I tried using your PY of 1080, which gave an IRC of about 0.81, losing you half a minute or so. About as good as we can get, I think, for the Rough Handicap Race.

The Hunter Impala (28ft) I used to sail on is currently 0.888, with spinnaker. I would have said that Gibsea 77 ought to be around 0.83 to 0.84?

Hunter Impala much faster than Gibsea 77. It has a PY of 958. Hunter Sonata closer with a PY of 1038.

Anyway, not really bothered. The PYs and IRCs only really make any sense if there is a series of races, so that boat and crew are tested on different courses and varying conditions. Also PYs and IRCs make assumptions on stuff like spinnakers, props, sail area and so on that race committees can make adjustments for. So a Rough Handicap is fine by me for the Rough Handicap Race.

I was happy to finish on the same day as the others :D

Anyone is welcome to join, but the notice of race was only about 12 hours before it started. You can of course set your own time and report it, but it is more fun in a group. I shall try and keep a record of anyone who does it.

If you see me anchored in Hamford Water, or anywhere else for that matter come over and say hello.

And if you can give me a little notice I'll try to be present and correct on board to crew next time. It was just lucky you didn't have the ankle-biters on board last weekend. Is there an IRC or SYH handicap adjustment for the penalty of single handing whilst providing creche facilities for two toddlers?
