I'm a bit bored in the down season, and fancy a new boating gadget, so what have you found invaluable to have around the boat or just good fun on the boat for not much money (lets set a notional budget of <£250).

Lets see your must have marine gadgets....

I know many will laugh at this ... I bought it after being in the pub ...

But in fact it works !

Cannot remember its name - but its a plastic affair you screw to the other end of a boathook. Mine has a short line attached to it that you can make fast to a mooring line ... you load the cross bar across the mouth and then when you want to put a line through a cleat or ring .. you press the bar on the cleat / ring and the line is put through and you have it brought back to you.
As long as you remember its plastic and don't get silly with it - it works ! Cost me about 10 quid !!

Here's a similar one ... mine's a heavier gauge french jobbie ...

I was gifted a remote LED battery powered light with two settings. All operated via a handy remote. Fits using a small powerful magnet to the top side of Bimini and slide along to position once connected.
A handy gadget for anyone with a Bimini to their boat and wanting extra light in the evenings. £25.00

sounds good, have you got a link to somewhere that sells it?

Moorfast is the British version. I have one and it is very useful, especially when single-handed.

LED Sprayhood light at 24.95 quid ?? Ok -its got remote control and 32 LED's ....

But local Builders merchant was selling these, 24 LEDs in two settings - all or part, magnetic mount and hook ... :

Actually works a treat with 4 recharge AA's in, not for reading a book by - but good enough to sit and have a beer in cockpit with friends .. even has a folding hook on the back ... cost ? 3.5 Euros ! Just a bit cheaper than 24.95 !!

Then we have the Rigel Plotter :

and the Aviation plotter :

I do have parallel rulers - professional of a ship - but they are a bit big so I tend to fall back onto the above.

I did but a set of rolling rulers - another buy after a few pints in the pub ... total rubbish !!

If you have a dinghy with a decent sized engine that's not wheel steered, then a tiller extension.
Mine does 25knots and I’ve learned how to use it standing, steering with my feet a a bit of tiller. Take the wake shock with your knees. Great fun.
if you can stretch to £400 , a paddle board.

How many have had a Seagull with a dowel rod stuck in the tiller as extension ??

Moorfast is the British version. I have one and it is very useful, especially when single-handed.

Aha! Now I know the purpose and operation of what I had previously thought were two unrelated items (the hook and the crossbar) that I inherited with my current boat. I had long intended to post pics of them on here to ask what they (and one other item) were.

Looks like it will be very useful.

p.s. especially for those accursed 'closed hoop' type mooring cleats (the work of the devil, who clearly hates single-handers).

If you look on YouTube, search Moorfast, there's a video showing how easy it is to use.

I agree, we call ours a Chung Chung, one of the most useful bits of kit on board, along with a good quality torch and a few tubes of CT1.

I was going to say the same thing - you may not use it often, but when you need to, it's invaluable.
