Evening all . Would anyone know the spec for the grease which goes into a Darglow flexo fold propeller. I ran out of grease during the job and hope to pick up some locally to finish. It was a light green colour. Thank you in advance as always.

I am on a similar quest to identify a grease for a Variprop. The instructions say 'fill with a high viscosity grease of a hydrophobic nature' and 'Avoid regular white grease (sterntube-grease ) !'

Variprop will, of course, sell you a small tube of such grease at a premium price (and I bought one for immediate use), but I would like to identify a more reasonably priced replacement for future use.

Variprop doesn't make it clear what is to be avoided about white stern tube grease, and I have several pots of different fairly viscous 'waterproof' or 'water-resistant' grease (one or more has lithium mentioned) which I've used for, variously, stern tubes, trailer bearings, seacocks, etc., and I've also some Blakes seacock grease somewhere. I don't know, from those instructions, how to tell whether any of these, or anything else I might buy, is suitable or not.

Many common greases are lithium based ..... you might be thinking of calcium grease which seems to be the basis for the waterproof grease commonly known as water-pump grease. This is what I use for propellors and rudder bearings which are permanently immersed.

Thank you all for your replies.I was not aware there was such a variety of grease. Has anyone got the definitive type as if I don't stay with what was supplied the guarantee will be void

i got mine from Darglow. I understand it is a very specific spec and not widely available. Unfortunately my tube is on the boat and not easily accessible. Just give Darglow a call rather than guess.

Thanks, but I wasn't 'thinking of' any particular grease. I was trying to work out what to buy (apart from their expensive 'own brand') which is 'highly viscous' and 'hydrophobic', but doesn't suffer from the un-named shortcoming of white stern gland grease.

Hi, had a look at the tube that came with mine and it's a Darglow marking, Feathering Propellor grease NLGI 1 Grade, fully water and salt resistant. Nothing more than that I'm afraid, looks like Darglow.

Blakes seacock grease is recommended for MaxProp

I have been greasing my Bruntons Autoprop with bog standard lithium based automotive grease for the past 18 years, no problems whatsoever. I assume a Variprop has seals of some sort that will mostly keep the water out, as the Bruntons does. As suggested, a calcium based grease will be ideal if there are no seals.

Sorry ... I thought you were mentioning "lithium" in the context of it being particularly hydrophobic. The hydrophobic and viscous grease is calcium grease which is usually described as waterproof and very thick, which it is.

I use a tub of this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Millers-O...436146?hash=item2a2ccfb4b2:g:ZekAAOSwqfNXoakP but other brands are available for less than a tenner.

I have a tube of the Darglow grease in front of me. The only thing on the label that gives any clue is NLGI 1 GRADE which is a softness grade as shown in this table https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLGI_consistency_number

What make it is I don't know, and cannot tell whether it is lithium or calcium based.

EDIT. The Millers waterpump grease linked in the above post is NLGI 4 and therefore far too thick for a feathering propeller.

A suitable grease is probably "Ramonol Advanced"

It is described as
A true multi-purpose grease for use in the harshest marine environment offering maximum protection of all marine equipment. It is a premium quality calcium sulphonate extreme pressure grease with superior water & wear resistance, corrosion inhibition & adhesion.
Ideal for stern glands, steering glands, seacocks, turning blocks, winches, davits, furlers, propellers (folding & feathering) and general purpose greasing.

The NLGI consistency is given as 1-2

See http://www.gruebb.com/controlpanel/shoppics/pdfs/GruebbRamonolAdvancedTDSnewstyle2pdf.pdf

It is available from Force4 and other chandlers for around £17 / 500g tub or around £7 / 150g tube

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

The OP is looking for a grease for a folding prop exactly the same as mine and the Millers waterpump grease is perfect for that, whereas LittleSister is looking for a "high viscosity" thick grease as recommended by Varifold and the Millers also fits the bill for that. :)
