GPS to laptop

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but I was wondering if someone could be kind enough to point me to a diagram showing how to wire up a serial lead to a GPS [I have a Garmin 128] - in other words, which wire on the GPS connects to which wire on the serial D connector.

I have just bought some plotting software. Unfortunately my laptoip doesn't have a serial port, so I'm going to have to add a serial to USB connector. Annoyingly the software comes with a USB dongle as well, so both my USB ports will be taken up!

What software have you just purchased ?

The garmin website have a download page for wiring diagrams , in a PDF format.


I just got the latest version of SEATRAK SKIPPER from the boat show ;-) have worked with this software for around 6 years now , and is brill for the diving trade , let alone for yotties and MoBo'ers .

Yes - the Seatrak software, bought at LBS yesterday. £100 for the software and £100 for 10 ARCS charts.

Thanks for the pointers to the Garmin site. There's nothing like the obvious, is there?

Garmin 128 blue to D type pin 2, black to pin 5. If you also want to be able to ugrade the 128 from your PC or download waypoints to the GPS, connect brown to pin 3.

Hi Stingo! How are you doing?

On 9 pin PC serial port pin 2 is data in to the PC and pin 3 is data out. Pin 5 is ground. On a 25 way pins 2 & 3 are swapped and ground is pin 7.

Re USB you can get an expander for USB it's a USB hub 1 in 2, 4, 6 out depending which one you buy

Get a USB expander

I use a 4 port expander on my single USB .... no prtoblem. In fact I can piggy-back another on that if wished.

Plus the USB problem is solved by getting a USB expander ..... this will exopand a single USB to 4 or more ports .... and so if you have 2 already - you can have 8 or more USB bits and bobs connected !!!!
