GPS & repeater

I have a fixed GPS down below with a Nasa repeater in the cockpit.I find it really useful.I also have a Yeoman at the chart table which I use more on longer passages.I must admit to also having a hand held chart plotter(raymarine 400) with navionics charts.Although the screen is small it is very good & I use it on other boats.

It very much depends on the sort of sailing you do. If sail long legs in open water then a below decks GPS with a chart and a log book is perfectly satisfactory.
If you want to sail a pre programmed multileg route then you are better served with :-
Garmin 128 GPS with Silva cockpit repeater - my present system
or
Cheapish chart plotter Lowrance 3600ci plus NauticPath chart
just acquired and being tried out on shore.
With either of the latter two you only need to leave the deck to write up the log.
PS the chart plotter spec suggests a bit less than 1 amp consumption but it probably depends a lot on the brightness of the back lighting.

3. Like to see you operating the yeoman on your knee in really bad weather!

If you want a lesson welcome on board - we do it all the time - whats the problem?

The thing is - I did, for years!
First Yeoman was bought in 1990 or so, hooked up to a 2000D Decca, on my Corribee, then to Evolution 25. Later used on Limbo 6.6 with Garmin 72 and lastly on Jouet 680.
I will have another Yeoman, as soon as I can afford to get my chart table enlarged to take one again.

Re: GPS & repeater

Garmin 128 and Silva Repeater is exactly the combination I use - they both work brilliantly. I also have a separate hand held plotter (Garmin 276C) which is very useful for pilotage. This combination ensures you have no single point of failure.

The Silva Star repeater has the added function of it's own MOB facility. Never had to use it thankfully but it would save having to dive below to the GPS in the event of someone going overboard.

It's also a considerably cheaper set up than a large plotter and repeater.
