What sort of gps receiver is needed for this nasa clipper ais radar does anyone know please?
I have quite a few GPS receivers but not sure what type of connection is needed. Tia

They need a basic NMEA 0183 connection. I connected mine to my old Cobra MC600i chartplotter, but I could have even connected it to my ancient (1999?) Magellan handheld gps.
If any of your gps units output nmea0183, then they will work.
The basic sentences output are lat/long, COG and SOG, and that is all the nasa needs.
I’ve still got my old nasa AIS radar in its box, I keep meaning to sell it on.

I have 3 Magellan handhelds at least. None came with cables not even 12v cable. The back of a Magellan has 3 gold contact points I think - did you need a special adapter or socket to plug into the Magellan? Tia

I bought a screw on charge and data cable combi that used those contacts on my Magellan, back in 1999. It was part of a rigid mount for the helm position.
I wouldn’t bother with it now though, the accuracy is probably relatively poor, as it was designed for gps signals with the old Selective Availability errors built in.

The nasa data cable you linked to was supplied with the unit when I bought mine. Most marine gps have wires you can break into for the gps data out, which that cable would easily hook up to.

I bought a nasa surface mount adjustable case for my AIS radar as an optional extra, as I didn’t want to recess it into a bulkhead or the like. They aren’t waterproof so need to be used inside the boat only.

Thanks. I have never found a Magellan handheld 12volt screw on(as you’ve reminded me) adapter , seem a bit like hens teeth. If I could find a cheap on it would save the cost of about £50 for mushroom gps antenna that Paul has linked to. Will start a search.

The Magellan adaptors are probably really scarce 25 years on, and I wouldn’t bother with such old kit.
There are gps mushrooms on AliExpress for about £20-£30

The connector is a 3 pin DIN audio connector available here:
3 pin DIN
Lots available from the usual sources.
The maunual doesn't give the pinout but if you need it I can have a look at mine and post it here.

SA being switched off means a more accurate position so you should get better results from your old Magellan.

Plus ... your old Magellan - I doubt was capable of Differential to counter the SA.

The only limitation on position accuracy now is how many sats it uses to determine position ... and if it survived Roll-Over.

I have an old Magellan - with rotate up antenna .... it still works - but takes ages to initialise and lock on ... even though its been often left switched on for days to update its alamanac etc.
My little basic eTrex still works as well ...

Both the ancient Magellan and eTrex agree well with my latest gear. In fact I've even used the eTrex to remark my estate boundaries .... I have my Topo in Grid as well as Lat / Long format.
