hi
help needed i have a furuno gps model gp-30 and furuno radar model 1830 is there any way off linking them to a laptop......thanks

I have a gp32, there is no problem linking to a laptop via a serial connection. Wiring details are in the handbook, (and on gps display in the case of the 32 ). If your laptop only has USB you will need to purchase a serial adapter. Presumably you wish to use the laptop as a plotter. For this you will need some form of application programme, Seaclear or Oziexplorer are free downloads with which you can experiment, you will also need some digital charts, which can take the form of scans. These programmes will enable you to view NMEA position data and also create, upload and download waypoints etc. on the laptop.
Can't advise on connection of your radar to the laptpo, you should be aware that it won't be possible to view the radar display in this way, although NMEA data output by the instrument could be monitored if you wish to.

If you intend to run the laptop on mains power, then use an opto isolator between the laptop and whatever you want to connect in. This will prevent the nasty problem of earthing damage due to differing voltage rails etc which can cause burnt out equipment!

Would appreciate a bit more tech info on this. Am puzzled since the laptop would be running on (say) an 18 v supply with no connection to earth - whatever that earth would be with an inverter.

genuine question because the whole issue of boat earths, mains earths and (for ssb) an RF earth puzzles me. in particular, the issue of stray current / sea cocks and anodes.
