'GPS could fail by 2010' - Cripes!

Re: \'GPS could fail by 2010\' - Cripes!

Utter baloney!

Pure media make it up as you go along bull5h1t.

The GPS network needs only 21 active satellites and 3 backup. Currently there are 31 GPS serviceable satellites in orbit, which leaves than 10 spare for backup. Galleleo is a decade away from widespread useability if indeed it ever offers a practical alternative to the GPS system, and it's usless as it won't work with any existing hardware (ie plotters, car sat nav, etc). This piece of media entertainment is a joke probably written by researchers that only use google and wikipedia for their information.

Agree for coastal passage making DR and eyeball navigation using paper charts is easy with the most basic chart and compass work. But it won't happen.

Re: \'GPS could fail by 2010\' - Cripes!

I think you will find that the 'threat' to motorists or indeed us is minor compared to the use the US military have for the system.

Not only that but in the US DGPS is starting to be used for precision airport approach by passenger aircraft.

I doubt if the US authorities would dare allow the system to go down.

Yet another scare story on a slow news day.
