GPS connecting to DSC VHF

I have a Garmin 192 Plotter, and four months ago changed my old VHF for a new M-Tech M700 DSC. Finally got round to connecting them to each other this week, but the radio keeps informing me that GPS is off and does not therefore show the position on the display. I`ve checked all connections and settings on both units are correct.....However I have not as yet programmed an MMSI into the radio -would cause the radio not to register the position on the display. Neither of the manuals are any help on this.

If the COM port on the plotter has never been used before, GArmin's aren't set to send NMEA by default, you need to setup as NMEA 0183

No. The problem lies elsewhere.

Garmin use their own connection protocol by default so you need to change to nmea and also change the speed/baud to what the radio needs
