GoPro vs Xacti...

I can't think of a better ambassador for the GoPro... I look forward to seeing bendy creeks and bendy rivers and bendy locals telling bendy tales!

Pete

I would like to say - as a newly appointed marine ambassador for GoPro that they are the finest cameras ever made

anyone who does not buy one this week is a crazy person

you can remove the fish eye look with some software

Make your mind up man. I've just bought a Panasonic HX-WA30 (which I believe is the updated Xacti) off eBay and it arrives tomorrow to replace my GoPro Hero. Now I have to decide which one to keep and which one to sell.

I don't trust your recommendations anymore so I've just cancelled my order of two plant pots and 100 tea lights.

now look here

I am only saying about the go pro because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars involved in the sponsorship

The American owners of Go pro have asked me to rename the series because they feel that it has political leanings, they want me to dump the sailing boat and get a jet ski, they do not want the series presented by an old bloke without any tattoos, and they want it filmed somewhere with warm, clear water.

I am under contract to shout "woo Hoo" at least once every 15 seconds during the films

apart from that everything stays exactly as it was

Hi I have two Gopro 3 black one is the+'I mount them on my push pit and pull pit! I have 12v dc battery eliminator for both so run them off the boat domestic batteries and control them with my iPad or iPhone. I am still new to Gopro but if you don't use wide angle do you still get the fish eye effect ? We took them to the Maldives an had great fun with them.
Today I have made an Ariel from coax so that the camera can be controlled and viewed on iPhone or iPad, great for looking at the boat bottom from the pontoon tried it today and it worked.
Regards mike

all this sounds wonderful, I cannot beleive that anyone would ever use any other sort of camera when you can do so many things with a GoPro - all sailors should have two on board

Love 'em or hate 'em, the GoPro is now more popular than ever!

This film was made using footage taken on both the GoPro and the (much cheaper) Xacti. You can clearly tell which shots were taken on which camera:

So which camera is better? I'll let you be the judge...

Pete

Horses for courses.

One is great for putting in inaccessible places, with little chance of damage.

One is great for decent pictures and synch sound.

Both are poor in low light and have various lens distortions at different settings.

Personally I'd sack the colourist.

Can I resurrect this thread??? I am thinking of getting a waterproof camera to mainly record time lapse series of images. I know the Go-Pro is able to do this. Can the Xacti do this as well?
Which of the many models of Go-Pro would be adequate for my needs? WHich of the Xacti would do the same

Thanks

If that is the limit of the requirements - any of the Go_Pros will do.

The big difference with the Black edition is resolution. The Silver will do Hi Res 1080 - the Black will do 4k. The white and basdic Hero have lower res on stills. 5mp v 10mp

AT the bottom - the difference is the remote control - White, Silver and black can be controlled remotely via wifi - the basic hero can't.

They all share the toughness re depth of water and the ridiculous range of mounts.

I opted for Silver 3+ - Resolution high enough for any screen I currently own and can control via my phone or an Ipad but a sensible resolution for any stills.

My Panasonic HX-WA30 (which I believe is the updated Xacti) does time lapse. My original Mk 1 GoPro also does time lapse but you need to stitch it together afterwards as it is just a collection of still photographs.

now do another comparison with the GoPro and the far far cheaper SJ4000 or Amkov SJ5000. Both of which have waterproof underwater cases and same accessories as GoPro. I paid £60 for mine with case and accessories....remind me again how much is a GoPro.

Can't comment on time lapse as I have the sj4000 (copy of GoPro), but my waterproof Xacti (CA100 model I think, by Sony before Panasonic bought it) did not stay waterproof for long. The damage was caused by going into a swimming pool (50 cm down) and temperature differentials when it was out of the pool in the sun and then back into the pool I think. It still works because I keep it in a bag of dessicant. When being used, sometimes the lens shows condensation upon it, so water got in somewhere. It is quite a few years old now. Maybe Google for reviews of newer Xacti to see if it stays waterproof for longer than my one.
