GoogleEarth and boating?

Hi,
does someone know some interesting applications related to boating? (e.g. useful overlays, placemark-collections, etc)
I really love this tool, but I haven't found too many useful applications for sailing yet (and I need more reasons for using GE /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ).

When two forum members were on the ARC, I followed the positions of all the boats on an overlay, and search for each boat by name, which someone put on the internet.

The same is available for many large races etc

I've found another interesting application: Clouds around the world, updated every 2 mins: http://www.trans-ocean.org/google/earth-datas/global_cloud_map.kmz

But I hope, there are some more applications....

I have to negotiate a couple of miles of river to get to the sea. I made a chart using google earth to use with Seaclear. Great way to show bars etc. {the sand kind}

I've been trying to think of a way of doing this with either SOB or the Lowrance 3500... in particular for the channel into Alvor between Portimao and lagos, (algarve).

Download a program named Franson GPS Gate V2.0. With it you can feed a GPS signal into your computer and run Google Earth with your position shown on it.
Note: I have no commercial connections with the product...just use it myself.

That would be nice, but as far as I know, GE needs online internet access. Would be interesting, if it is possible to cache some data to run GE offline.

If you can record a track, you can then use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?form=google to create a kml file for Google Earth or a Google Map.

Not owning a chartplotter, and relying on paper charts which I keep on the boat, I've found it quite handy to take digital photos of my charts then add them as overlays to Google Earth to allow a little route planning while at home.

Obviously I can't put those on the net for copyright reasons, but doing it yourself with your own charts is, I'd have thought, unlikely to land you in any trouble.
