I recently commented to GC1 in another thread that he had an amazing ability to upset people. His posting were often insensitive in the extreme and frankly I believe that either CG1 got a pleasure from provoking people of he suffered from one of those syndroms that cover people lacking social skills/empathy. I would have been curious to meet him as I am facinated by what makes people tick.

Its sad that Ships Cat is so upset that he wishes to go but while I hate all forms of censorship in posting to this forum I now realise I am a hypocrite. I realise that forums like this would not be as good without a guiding hand and I believe Keith's hand is a very light and sensible one.

I therefore believe I am a hypocrite and quote Mrs Thatcher "I go for agreement, agreement for the things I want to do".

As such I normally find myself in complete agreement with Keiths often difficult decisions and the sooner he bans sycophantic posts like this the better!!!

Not been banned. It would seem to me that by allowing the post you wish to promote blasphemy.

I must regretfully question your moral and ethical standards. Are they really adequate if you allow filth like that and then ban GC1?
 
Sorry, your histronics would be more worthy if you'd made your point any of the previous times that particular inocuous picture was posted.

Sorry you feel like that, but am genuinely puzzled why you feel it is nesessary to leave Scuttlebutt and not just the Lounge.

Most of us probably didn't even look at the original post. Normally, I wouldn't have bothered reading it, and only did so as it had stirred up all the brouhaha. If I'd seen the image(s), I would probably have protested, as I have done previously over previous sick images -the gloating (and false/racist) account, and photographs, of a man squashed to death by a truck, spring to mind.

If people are offended by that sort obscenity, then is it not reasonable for them to protest? That does not mean that people have conspired to have a person barred IMHO. The only people responsible for that were GC1 and Keith.

John, I feel that I've benefitted from your threads, and hope that you'll reconsider, at least as far as Scuttlebutt is concerned. Otherwise, good luck, and fair winds.

So far I have kept out of this debate, but Mr Vitalman does have a point of sorts? However, having said that, I do have some empathy with the position you find yourself in.

I am the Group Owner / Moderator of a Yahoo Egroup, (sailing oriented)......and I understand where you are coming from, and as a matter of fact I agree with your decision.

I think that the difficulty for a bloke sitting in your chair is that "you can't please all the people all of the time", so I say to you, stick with your decision, those that were upset by it will mostly get over it. Those that can't get over it, will either have to lump it, or weigh anchor!

To all, I really do think that it is time to move on folks, the miscreant that started this whole shermozzle has now departed, so why don't we just get on with the exchange of ideas and information that makes this forum so interesting and entertaining.

A certain Club forum that shall go un-named ...

has a Get it of yer Chest section ......

The posts auto delete after 7 days ... It was inserted into the club site after seeing spats ruin other sites .. Every member knows it's there ... every member is aware that it may contain matter that is not to everyones taste ... but it gets the air cleared and back to biz in hand ....

I was talking to a landlord I know, about how he keeps trouble out.

His reply was that he ensures he fills the pub with people who don't make trouble.

His pub, like this forum, would be in trouble if everyone except the troublemakers left, the vacuum so caused will be filled with the inevitable
 
I didn't see it when it was posted previously either. When it was posted yesterday I saw it for the first time and complained to Keith about it by pm. He promised to look at it, but I heard nothing more. It's been left there.

There are an awful lot of 'troublemakers' who will have been put off this forum, I believe.
 
I can't see the problem with that picture. There again I'm not of a religious bent.
However, as has been pointed out already, if it was "Can you see Allah?" then there would be World War 3.
So in the interests of even-handedness, you probably do have a point.

Just seen this John.
As we have been involved with common contacts professionally I feel I know you better than many on here although we have never actually met. I usually tend to agree with your posts on practical matters and we have often found ourselves reinforcing the same argument technically. All I would say is that I too have had periods of long silence when I have got upset with certain postings and gone away, but have been brought back for several reasons.

1. There are people on here who genuinely need good technical advice.
2. Someone has to protest when vociferous ill informed twassocks talk rubbish. (We have both done some of that!)
3. I have received so many PMs with thanks from people privately that I am aware of the very large readership of people who very rarely post themselves, but get a lot from it.

So I don't walk away. I just don't read the large majority of non boaty posts, especially in the lounge, which was an attempt by the moderators to get all that crap off scuttlebutt in the first place. ( although I have been tempted to post there too occasionally)
Personally I don't give a toss if people who can't stay within the bounds of good taste get banned. I would probably throw them out of my lounge too, so keep up the good work Kieth! Extreme bad taste, gratuitous insults (unless in fun and taken as such) and blasphemy such as the "can you see Jesus" post have no place here.
You do though John. You represent what the forum should be all about. Good "scuttlebutt" informed technical advice and a bit of good humoured banter on the side. Stick around buddy. Keith is only doing his job and in my opinion very well. Don't let the unwashed masses P you off. They are not just on this forum, they are everywhere! They need to be dealt with not run away from..... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Dunno if you're still reading, probably not, but anyway I'm sorry to see you go. I've already said enough about what I think on the matter elsewhere so I'm not going to repeat myself here, but have a good summer and great sailing. I think it's a real shame that such a valuable forumite as you has been driven to this decision, but I'm sure you're not alone in feeling as you do.
