One of next years projects is to clean up the bilges.

This involves a fair amount of work on the wrought iron floors. Problem is that I would like to get under the 2GM20 engine to deal with frames, floors, mounts etc. I also want to service/replace the two Blakes cockpit drain seacocks.

So, I am looking for somewhere to lift out and have the propshaft pulled, engine disconnected, lifted and put ashore for couple of weeks whilst I do the work, then engine returned to my immaculate engine bay, re-connected and ready to go.

Any suggestions for a good yard (anywhere between the Blackwater and Lowestoft) with a competent, reliable, trustworthy and good value engineer to do this work?

If anybody has gone down this route before, a ball park figure of cost of the engineering work (excluding lift out, storage etc) would be much appreciated.

TIA

I have used Peter Norris (mobile engineer) who is based at Larkman's Yard in Woodbridge (just above actually at Melton) on the Deben.

They are just a plain old fashioned boatyard working to good standards and the charges are reasonable. Peter also sails a Westerly cruiser so his advice is very relevant.

good choice but they are limited in what they can lift over the wall & very restricted tide wise

Biggest boat than I can remember being there last week when I visited their chandlery (cheapest on the East Coast?) was a Nicholson 40 with a 6ft draft! They also had a very nice Colvic Watson 34"6'. Yes the tides need to be considered but the OP's boats don't draw much and Larkmans will pick your boat up from a mooring (as far as Ramsholt!) or from the Tide Mill at very reasonable cost.

i was a customer from around 83 to 95

Thanks, both. The boat is a Vertue drawing 1.52m.

I will pop in and see them. I was also considering the Melton Boatyard but Larkmans looks interesting.

The work is not essential and, having missed this years sailing through doing work on the boat, I am determined to get some in next summer before I do the job.

A friend of mine has just had a similar job done at Kings at Pin Mill - engine out, floors replaced, engine repainted etc. and a very nice job it was too. I can't recommend Kings highly enough from personal experience of keeping my boat there for the last 10 years or so.

I'm new to using King's but I've been impressed by thier helpfulness & thier charges are quite reasonable too when they have lifted & relaunched my boat for me.

They have a crane rated to 20 tonnes plus so unlikely to be a problem. We draw 4'6" and have access at normal tides of about a 4 hour window, 5 on some springs, so again not very restricted

The yard just before is Granary Yacht Harbour with good honest boatyard facilities. They also use Peter, but Simon is one of the three partners at Granary and did some excellent work for us at reasonable prices.

#5 ;)

Thanks for that.

So, I have a cunning plan.

I go to Larkmans and get a quote.

I chop 20% off it and go to Granary where they undercut the 'quote' by 10%.

I then chop 20% off that quote and go to Kings where they undercut the 'quote' by another 10%.

That should work

You are not dealing with your fancy marinas here, you are dealing with honest, hard working, decent folk at all three of these yards. The people you talk to are the people doing the work, not passing it on to "the workforce". In these circumstance I work on the basis that I treat people as I would want to be treated myself.
