Can anyone recommend a good insurance company. I have spoken to several of the well known names and they don't seem to know one end of a boat from another. My boat is currently afloat in a marina but in lay up mode i.e. no sails etc. and no intention of going anywhere until April. I am told this is highly unusual and will incur a much higher premium if cover can be arranged at all. I do wonder how the several hundred other vessels afloat in the marina got cover or is everyone just deciding to forget insurance this year!

My father had Rogue covered by GJW for 3 years when he was in Pwhllelli marina... I think he came out of the water for a couple of weeks during the whole of that time.

I'm covered by Axa via brokers Mardon Marine, and they know I will be in the water, more or less permanently, (albeit, a bit further South).

Hope this helps

We insured with Navigators and General, our boat was laid up for a couple of months, it did not seem to be a problem, just asked us to let them know when it was relaunched and where it would be kept.

GJW always ask me if the boat is in use for winter when I move it to a marina, so I assume they discount if it is not.

Have you tried mardon Marine and GJW.

I must admit it never even crossed my mind that there could be a problem geting insurance for a boat in a marina. On a mooring, OK, but in a marina??

Google Polestar .... (KC Powell) ..... very good - very happy customer for years.

Was covered 12 mths afloat ... just advise when in / out commission etc. or use all year ...

I'm insured with Bishop Skinner. in the past the boat has been insured 'in commission', between April and October. and laid up otherwise this year I decided to keep the boat 'in commission' throughout the winter (because I want to sail when the weather is good). Rang them up, and told them that the boat will be 'in commission' all the year roumd, because I wish to sail all the year round. No problem, because I moor in a marina. No change in premium.

I'm covered with Navigators and General through Max, and have just had a flier from him saying that he proposes to switch me to GJW.

Have 12 months on the mooring cover at the moment. Indeed, the boat is on the mooring now.

Likewise. We've been with him for 11yrs now and always had excellent advice and service and having discussed the switch with him I'm quite happy to follow his guidance again. The reason for the switch is quite interesting but you'll have to ask him!

It's obviously delicate as you dont seem to want to declare what it is, for fear of compromising your broker, (Max?).

However, if it's a smart, creative, sensible, money saving, better cover, etc. kind of reason, surely he would be happy for us all to know... we might switch to him???

At the moment, I'm wondering if he's been bribed, (joke!), his girlfriend/wife works for GJW, or has moved to GJW, they throw a great Xmas party, and so on.

Just being inquisitive

Thanks. I'll be doing so. I have a slight problem with the singlehanding restriction, which I need to speak to him about.

I've been with N&G for years through Nautical Insurance Services in Southend. Can't fault them down to very effiicient handling of a 3rd party claim. Also afloat all year in a boatyard with single handed cover.
