I use Craftinsure.com (underwritten by Navigators & General) who have been excellent. Am on a swinging mooring & often singlehanded - no problems with either & a generous cruising area covered.
Much as I'd like to spill the beans, it wouldn't be fair. Let's just say that in light of Max's experience with another company, I'm quite happy to be moved away to GJW about whom I've heard a lot of good things.
Been with GJW for a few years now, not claimed, but SWMBO's dad got his yot crunched from behind by a fishing boat, and again at the pulpit by another boat. On both occasions they paid for repairs no questions asked. Dad wasnt even on the boat on both occasions.
Ergo- I am with GJW. Hope I don't run aground whilst shagging!
May not be the cheapest but I am with Pantaneus. When I did make a claim is was handled so smoothly all to my benefit I now would go nowhere else. Never been asked whether in the water or out. I am normally in the water in a marina and usually com out mid December and gobackin mis January.
They are cherrypicking. Why dont you employ their logic against them. Tell them that you have changed your mind and want to singlehandedly circumnavigate via both poles!
People power wins again! After gathering all of your comments and expressing them to several insurers, they have suddenly changed their minds - result is boat now insured at a competitive price with good cover. Thanks again to everyone who helped. You are all little gems!!!!!!!!
I am insured with Navigators and General. Their premiums are not expensive compared with others and when I had to claim, they approved it within 2 days of receiving the claim form. Payment followed just as quickly when the work was completed.
Navigators and General came up trumps in the end. Sorry for the delay in reply but I'm away for the weekend. Thanks for the suggestions though. Navigators came up with the best compromise in cost/cover.
I'm with Pantaenius. Yes, their quote was more expensive than others, but they also offered more no claims discount than others, and thus became cheaper than N&G (who are a bit of a nightmare to deal with on the telephone too, and refused to offer me discount on a second boat). Very happy with Pantaenius, and all the good things I hear about them.
Just before 2006 Southampton Boat Show I asked my insurance company for a renewal quote. At the boat show I visitited their stand and told them that my "girlfriend" wanted to insure her boat which she had not yet named for a cruising area which was identical to mine, her stated qualifications and experience were also identical to mine but of course she did not have a no claim bonus as a first time insurer. What a surprise her quote for insurance was over £100 less than my renewal quote. When this anomaly was pointed out to a senior underwriter my renewal premium was immediatly reduced.Read the small print and double check the quotes every year,I now prepare a proposal to give to the companies and ask them all to quote.
Being out on a mooring costs more, alongside berthing less, and laid up is cheapest of all.
Unless a broker here knows differently.
I'm in commission all year round, which should be expensive. But accepted by Bishop Skinner (discounted through the RYA). They also cover me for single-handing AND at night (oops, old thread, sorry!)
But peeps agree that settling claims sorts out the best insurers. I've just had prompt response to a claim for £2100 - no probs, not even a surveyor to check. The downside? I lose a £40 NCB.
