Good thoughts please and prayrs to the weather gods...

He still seems to be in the Amble...
It is a lovely day for sailing... get a move on laddie

I wish! Set out to drive the ban back to Fambridge at five this morning, just departing London Waterloo on the train to Southampton as I write

Got to bend on the mainsail this afternoon and my crew can't make it until this evening

Tomorrow looks a bit so-so but fingers crossed

The W33 is a great boat, really well designed - and no offence but about 23 times prettier than a Westerly Vulcan.

Yeah, the Vulcan was a bit aesthetically challenged but had a lot going for it below decks.

The W33 will work for us nicely though so we're definitely not at all disappointed :)

Dont hold back Man, 23 is a gross underestimate imo

True that. It's about 900 million times better looking than the Vulcan that IMHO opinion looks like it was designed by My Westerly's son using his lego set. BTW it's OK to be rude about a boat you didn't buy? The W33 is a cracking boat and the basis for the equally brilliant Discus.

Could you all pray harder please? It's looking even more pants tomorrow than it was this morning!

(Unless there's a drastic improvement overnight I don't think we'll be going anywhere tomorrow)

The wind gust chart for 12:00 tomorrow from the GFS model. Gusts of 32 to 36 knots and it gets worse as the day wears on.

The base wind is 16 to 20 knots by the afternoon

The Met Office forecast issued at 15:44UTC today makes even worse reading

Dover, Wight - South Westerly Gale Force 8 expected later with SW 5 or 6 veering West 5 to 7 occasionally gale 8 later and a sea state of slight or moderate becoming rough later

The inshore waters forecast doesn't make me feel any better either! Strong winds almost across the board

We'll see what the morning brings, in Erbas I might chance it if my crew was up for it but I don't know Pagan yet and haven't the confidence in the rig or the engine to take even the slightest risk. Better to wait a day and see what Thursday brings but I'll make the final decision in the morning

Totally right approach with an unknown boat.

I'm a bit confused though, you said you'd had to lower your budget after house sale difficulties, but wasn't Sandpiper on the market for about double your reduced budget? Did you do a very good deal?

And as others have said, the Vulcan doesn't have any "row away" quality.

This from Pagan. Hmmm.

:D

I was not unaware of the irony

Sandpiper was indeed on the market originally for rather more than we could have afforded but she'd been reduced and then we did a good deal!

She needs some work but she's a very good base boat to improve the way we want

This from Pagan. Hmmm.

Some years ago I was given a book called 'Sailing Through Acts' by an American, Linford Stutzman. Stutzman buys a Westerly 33 in Greece and decides to follow the voyages of St Paul through the Mediterranean. What makes it a great read is that Stutzman has never sailed before and the Westerly 33 is a little the worse for wear and Greek boat fitters can be a little avaricious.

Bru's naming of his W33 'Pagan' made me laugh in the context of the book. Maybe St Paul can watch out for the weather for you although he didn't have a good record with the weather and was wrecked a number of times but not in a Westerly 33.
