Good ole\' Pantaenius

Crikey chaps... just got me invoice for next years insurance.

Up from 333:00 for 2002/2003 season to 554:00 for 2003/2004.. and that includes 40% no claims!.

When I called, I was informed that my boat had got older!! Bloody strange that, has anybody else had a boat that got older...?

Seriously though, partly due to this and also the very poor press that Pants' got earlier this year, has anyone got any recomendations on where to go for a decent cover.. Im not looking for bargains but I get the feeling that I'm being "had" here.

Thanks Nick.

Try KC Powell , Polestar. I had the same problem and have changed to them. I found them very helpful and they are able to make decisions without reference to a higher authority. Incidentally, Pants have made no attempt to contact me to see why I have not renewed cover!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Good ole\' Pantaenius

I am paying 22quid a month to CraftInsure.com for a Moody 346.

Immediate quote and policy online, and when I queried something by e-mail they responded within an hour.

No worries.

CraftInsure...

CraftInsure seem to offer very attractive rates, and they debit your credit card monthly. Their cover is also better than some other insurers.

Re: Good ole\' Pantaenius

Having bought my first boat earlier this year I spent a lot of time reviewing the various insurance options. It seems that most underwrite through Nav & Gen and in the end like a few of the other "posters" I used CraftInsure and found the website particularly user friendly and very quick to respond to email queries. Not only were they the least expensive (nothings ever cheap!) but I also like the fact that it gets debited monthly off my credit card.

It\'s a total mystery...

I had the same problem and posted about it a month ago. My insurance with Pants jumped from £350 to £660 or so. I rang and was told they were not insuring wooden boats older than 30 years at all but mine was just under the wire at 32 years. I then got about 12 quotes using the names given to me in various posts. One broker quoted more than £800 for a Haven Knox Johnston policy while another quoted £380 also for a Haven Knox Johnston policy. This was by far the cheapest and it came from Bristol Channel marine Insurance in Cardiff (mislaid the number I'm afraid), very good service. It baffles me how I could get two such different quotes from the same company but there we go, the whole insurance thing is a total mystery.

Likewise - Craftinsure.com (risk carrier Nav & Gen) now cover my Dufour 30 at £17.45 pm (£262 pa) on a swinging mooring & response has always been prompt (no claims yet thankfully), also offer a wide cruising area with few restrictions - though like almost everyone's premium it did jump up by 33% this year...

Re: Good ole\' Pantaenius

I was shopping around for insurance quotes a couple of months ago and Pants wouldn't even quote because the boat (grp SHE Traveller I was considering buying) was over 30 years old. I got a good quote from Bishop Skinner 'subject to survey'.

Ditto Craftinsure. My rate is 0.34%. Others posted here look similar. If I remember rightly, you can have a look at the standard policy doc on their site. Underwritten by Navigators and General. You can even make your claims online.

Re: Good ole\' Pantaenius

Thanks for all the replies. I have the premium down to 330 now,, a saving of around 250quid. Not bad!

One broker sujested that Pants wanted 'out' of this side of the business. Thanks again.

All best Nick

Re: Good ole\' Pantaenius

I changed halfway thorugh the season to Navigators. Not only was it cheaper (on £80,000) but in my opinion - it is a better policy - especially on the aspect of betterment if I lost my 26 year old mast.

I cannot understand why older boats are being descriminated against. This may be because people insure for market value - when quite clearly the replacement cost of a mast is totally out of proportion to the sums insured. Insurance should be calculated - not on the market value - but the replacement costs. These are so often miles apart.

Perhaps insurers should make sure that we do not (unwhittingly ) under insure our boats.
