Good News for the Mar Menor in Spain

The last three years were an ecological disaster for the Mar Menor, a plane crashed into it, massive floods filling it with all sorts of nasties and a massive algeal bloom. This time last year the water was dark green/brown and very dirty. The wake from boats was a horrible dirty brown mess into dark green water with lots of dead fish.

Today we have just been for a long dog walk along the sea front at Los Alcazares on the west side of the Mar Menor and the water at the beach was crystal clear with small baby fish and plant life growing again. No idea what the government have done but it looks like it is working.

Not able to see any from the beach. The jelly fish seem to come with the algae which looks like its gone. If the weather gets a bit better I might take the boat for a run out and go and have a proper look. Its been very windy on the Costa Blanca these last few weeks.

That's great. The pollution had put us off from a cruise down there but will consider it now.

Plenty of places to go without the Mar Menor. Don't worry the locals are mostly harmless - the rest are in a bar

How is the Mar Menor nowadays???

I am thinking of a trip into the lagoon on 3rd August, any tips on where to moor and a good restaurant would be much appreciated!

Is there anyone on here that has visited Mar Menor in Spain recently, I am supposed to take a Phantom 50 in there next week for a friend and wanted to know of any interesting spots to visit therein....

In a fifty footer your choices are limited to Los Alcazares on the western side of the mar menor. You will find it difficult to fit in any of the other marinas. You will need to book as its busy and not big. Quite a pretty Spanish seaside town, lits of cafes and restaurants.

Or Thomas Maestre marina which is at the end of the sea canal as you enter the mar menor. Huge, loads of big boats, I never booked. There are quite a few bars and restaurants at the marine. Not a lot else thereafter. There is a supermarket close to the marina.

Dont buy fuel in the mar menor its expensive. Torrevieja Marina Salinas is good for diesel. The fishing boats use it so the diesel is fresh.
