Good news for Mistley Quay

Yes, this listing should be helpful.

On Thursday Free the Quay showed a mock up of the new fence (iron railings 1.5m high with spikes on top) which the owners of the Quay, TW Logistics, are seeking to put up (this would have to be approved by Tendring Council). Apparently the new fence will be painted in "Venetian Red", which seems a little strange. As Simon Bullimore, Chairman of Free the Quay, says: "...Mistley is not St Marks Square. The river is the Stour of Constable not the Grand Canal of Canaletto." FTQ has previously offered to install a more suitable bollard and chain type fence, of the sort seen around St Katharine's and many other historic docksides, but the offer has been refused.

The public inquiry concerning Village Green status for the Quay will take place from June 24th to June 27th in Mistley Village Hall.

I will try to post a picture of the (totally unsuitable) proposed new fence when I can figure out how to download it.

is there a public footpath adjacent to the proposed fence ? I seem to remember that you can't put dangerously sharp fences adjacent to a public footpath.
 
Ultimately the same issue still stands. TW will do anything for the quay not to be accessible to the public. Personally I think the company / fence is a blight on a beautiful village.
I hope people stand firm and manage to ultimately get access back.

Spiked fence?? Its an accident waiting to happen.

Still none the wiser.
It's a quay - from the pictures I've seen the fence stands right by the edge.
Is it stop people arriving in boats from landing or to stop people from the shore getting into a boat?
And how does anyone save or make money from this fence? :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

The landowner is trying to benefit from having the value of the land increased by (a) effectively removing the public rights to access and cross the land (including berthing boats at the quay), and (b) having the unsightly appearance of the fencing and the potential reinstatement of access as bargaining counters in a planning application to develop the land buildings.

I would be very surprised if the district council (planning), county council (highways) and harbour authority didn't have powers to do something about the current situation, but suspect they will be very wary of getting involved in what could be an expensive legal battle.

I must admit to being somewhat surprised/amazed that an asset like a town quay should be in private and not public ownership.

If the good buggers of the town want the quay in public ownership..

They should put their money where their mouths are and buy it..... Then as owners, they will be the ones responsible for the maintanance of a grade II listed structure.. That will get very expensive over the next few years.


It is also interesting to compare the ATL at Queenborough with Mistley Quay. The vital facility at Queenborough is not making enough money to pay for the upkeep. It has been closed and it is possible that it will ot open again? Mistley quay was a commercial facility. It charged for unloading cargo. However the ships have got bigger and gone away. Now itis useless. Except for those who want to enjoy using someone elses property without paying for it.

Didn't think this was about temporary ownership but about generations of access? (All property ownership is temporary)

Any ideas why maintenance of a quay is going to get expensive? Its been there hundreds of years and not needed much.

It is perhaps useless for unloading large cargo ships - but that doesn't make it 'useless' for everything else (such as sitting on and enjoying, as has been done for many years!).

I dont suppose you have ever enjoyed someone else's property by walking along a river bank or a footpath through some beautiful countryside.

And dont try to tell me that I should see it from the other side of the fence. I am the custodian of a 'useless' grade 2 listed property and I am quite happy to allow free access to it for all to enjoy. I hope that when I am gone the next custodian continues in the same way.

Sorry to get a bit grumpy!
