Hello,

Been a while since I posted anything on YBW - been busy doing other things. Good to be back!

Anyway, I need to purchase a pair of 7x50 bins and don't want to spend over £50 (they'll get battered quickly enough). There are loads on ebay but I'm not really familiar with any of the makes.

Does anyone have any suggestions on makes to look out for? It does need to be waterproof and useful in low light.

Thanks for them. That link to ebay - I keep seeing those bins for sale and keep bottling it thinking cheap means crap but I guess if you're paying such a small amount it really doesn't matter how long they last! At least you've both confirmed that it's not worth spending loads of cash. Thanks.

I ve had a set of russian 7x50's for 12 years and they are still good, a bit bulky but the image quality is very good.

We're happy with the Gael Force £39.99 waterproof ones. I tried them in the shop first, which is always a reassurance. I would guess that these are the same product sold under different names.

Are these fixed focus? I prefer that type as they can be passed around the crew without any fiddling about. I used to have the Plastimo fixed focus till they flew across the cabin one day, I found that they used to fog up if you got caught out in the rain, but the optics where good for the price. These sound like an ideal replacement.

Turn Turtle.com do the identical pair to the Binacom's which used to be £100. Included are a serviceable compass with night illumination. Fixed focus but adjustable eye-pieces. £9.98 over your budget but you do get a lot more for your money IMHO than the £30 sets. We got a set at the strat of the year and are well pleased.

Regards

Chas
