Going Cruising?

Having seen the large thread on cost of crusing in the Med, it would seem that lots of us are planning to get away soon. It would be interesting to know what all those plans are. I leave work in two weeks and husband in five, and we plan to move on to the boat ny late April and get away, headed down toward the Med by June (hopefully). We are just about to sign of for the ARC and there are three other Bavaria 38's already going. Biggest headache was realising that our gas locker was useless for propane (we want to cruise East Coast of America) , so we are having to change that and there is not a lot of space. We really are ripping up those £20.00 notes at the moment for all the bluewater gear. What is everyone else planning?

Sorry to hear that you are leaving your husband in 5 weeks time ....couldent you take him with you, he would come in handy for reefing and stuff...lol

Yes you are right, I ought to take him too, he is good at fixing things and after 33 years, it would be too cruel to leave him behind!!!

leaving work ,and sweden, middle of May, sail to amsterdam
remove mast ,send mast to port napoleon by road.
motor through holland ,belgium slowing down through the
great wine producers off france - eventually we will catch the mast
up. put it back up cruise down french riviera,,Italian riviera ,elba looks nice,pisa,
maybe winter in malta -maybe greece, maybe still in bar in central france.
No , it's not exactly the ARC we are 'planning'. and have strict schedule -must
come back some time.(maybe)

I'm off for two months end June/beg July - Sort of Algarve & back. I was tempted by an organised rally but timings don't fit.

I have a Bavaria 40. I'd be most interested in the shopping list of 'bluewater' kit you have put together. Any chance of a 'butchers'?

Also plan a longer cruise this summer and in two years take off for real.
Plan for this summer is to start in the Clyde area where I currently have the boat, check out the north and the west of Ireland, then to the Azores for some time, then Madeira and for the winter to the Algarve.
Would certainly like to hear any good thigs to see and what pubs to check out in Ireland.
We plan to start early June and I need to be in Madeira the first week of August, all else depends on the wind.
Also if we get too frustrated beating out to the Azores, we might change course and head for Vigo or Bayona.
I have not been sailing in the Azores now for almost 30 years, but have it in wonderful memory, so we want to give it a try.

Hopefully there ourselves first week in June, then Kinsale and heading for Portugul. Fingers crossed!

remove mast in Amsterdam: miss the best part

Why remove the mast in A'dam ? Why not take the so called "standing mast route". You can get to Ghent - Belgium, without taking your mast off, and visit waters like Haringvliet-Volenrak-Grevelingen-Oosterschelde-Westerschelde. All through inland waters and canals.

I've done the trip Ghent-Amsterdam (IJsselmeer) twice in four years.

Suggestions (free chart included)

Follow the Staandemastroute from Amsterdam. Coming from Skandinavia, enter the IJsselmeer at the Den Helder locks.

Inland waterway charts needed: 1803.1805.1807.1810. 20€ each. Buy them at chandler in Den Helder.

As soon as your in the Zeeuwse estuaries (after 2 days), here's my ten cents worth:
Day 1: Haringvliet: Hellevoetsluis
Day 2: Hollandsdiep: Willemstad
Day 3: Oosterschelde: Goes city (it's not on the chart, but after Goes lock, you can sail right into the hart of the 18c city)
Bypass Grevelingemeer: need a tourist sticker to sail on the Grevelinge
Day 4: Goes-Veerse Meer- Flushing. Try to get in the Michiel de Ruyter marina (need the tidal window)
Day 5: Westerschelde Flushing - Antwerp. Leave mast at Antwerp

If you're in a hurry: Willemstad-Wemeldinge-Antwerp

Alternate route: Willemstad-Goes-Terneuzen-Gent
