going aground - getting off.

I would be surprised if all pbo readers read ym and all ym readers read pbo? I guess there must be some cross over but not as much as you are suggesting otherwise there would not be two magazines?

Personally I think you are being a little harsh.

Its quite normal practice in the publishing industry for titles from the same house to compete quite fearcly with each other.... I work for both the Mail and the Mail on Sunday and they will knife each other in the back to get a exclusive if nessecary... and I can assure you that the Sun would never tell the Times or the News of the World what they are up to...

I think what is more disturbing than the occasional PBO/YM double take is the amoun of times that Sailing Today and YM appear to have the same stories.....

I think this is more about "opportunity" than planning... so fer instance.. the CG will put out a opp for the mags about.. hi-line rescues... and all three will turn up to do the peice... either on the same day or whatever.... and each will end up running a simular story in short time of each other.... The Mags have to be brave enough to ask if someone else is doing the piece... and then do something different.

I've taken all that weight out, but look what's happened!

Makes a winch down into the cockpit look interesting!

I'm blissfuly ignorant, and of this problem, I can only afford to buy one w**k mag, so I stick to PBO. I'm above the dingy sailors in Yachts and Yachting, but don't aspire to the 30+ or even 40+ foot yats in Yachting Monthly, and Yachting World is just another World.

In the words of Monty Python, or was it TW3, know your place, and in the words of me, stick to it.
Exactly. Which is why combining YM and PBO does not make commercial sense: editors and publishers have to be quite clear about their target audience. For the uninitiated, the target audiences are as follows:

Yachting World
[Hey, isn't that good, you can get formatting with keyboard short cuts - Ctrl-B for bold, Ctrl-I for italic, Ctrl-U for underline]
- those who have so much money, they don't know what to do with it;
- those who have no money, but reckon that before long they'll win the lottery;
- those whose sailing is confined to Cowes week;
- dreamers who fancy themselves as ocean racers.

Yachting Monthly
- those that have just enough money to buy a yacht and maintain it;
- those who are saving up for a yacht, and don't yet realise how much it will cost to maintain it;
- dreamers who fancy themselves as circumnavigators.

Practical Boat Owner
- those that have managed to buy a yacht, but can't afford to maintain it;
- those in the process of building or restoring a yacht;
- dreamers who fancy themselves as boatbuilders.

If you try telling a YW target how to service a Baby Blake, he'll stop buying the mag. Likewise, a PBO reader doesn't want to know about the latest contraption from Sweden costing upwards of half a million quid. From IPC's point of view it's a bonus if a punter fits the profiles of two or more titles - e.g. dreamers who fancy themselves both as boatbuilders and as circumnavigators.

Even if only 10% of both magazine 's readers read the 'other' one then that becomes in the current climate a significant proportion of the readership. To lose 10% of ones readers through bad planning of articles would seem to me to be crazy even if it is for one month. Once a custonmer stops buying automatically they can be very difficult to get back into the regular buying mode.

I have to say I don't agree with most of what is being said on here but that's the thing about these forums everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

I just enjoy reading all three - YM, PBO and Sailing Today. [I swap some of them with a friend]. If they cover the same matters it just means that I am a little more likely to be able to remember the wisdom expressed!

"I know my place", brilliant!

Sorry Fred......

lighten up scotty and give the guy a break - he went to the bother of explaining the background to us all. Official Apology?? for covering a relevant topic that could be of benefit to us all? not appropriate in my estimation. Still we could be living on different planets....

Cant make up my mind whether Scotty is extremely pompous or has a wicked sense of humour. :confused:

Snooks.
I dont for a minute think you are knowingly telling porkies but the number of times this co-incidence has happened beggars belief ! Nevertheless, if indeed there is no co-ordination then maybe there should be. IPC would undoubtedly sell more mags if there was no duplication.

Snooks - that's an excellent couple of shots - it bet the landing was a bit shocking though.

I've not read the article yet (in the CI's on holiday!) but I thought it was routine prac to drop the main for a hele drop?
