What sort of price should I look to pay for one. Andark are offering one of the more recent models for £280. Is this is a fair deal, and do I need anything else to use it underwater ?

For occasional use a colleague has suggested a basic digital camera and waterproof case from Amazon. Not sure a Go Pro would get used that much, just like the idea of it. Not a photography expert by any stretch of the imagination.

For underwater use a case is a must, my brother has one all be it for his motor bike but the quality of the images is fantastic especially if linked to a good mount.

Not sure on the price but a quick search of the net should give a fair idea

It comes with the waterproof housing and the various mounts but you will definitely need to add a spare battery. It doesn't specify that it comes with the suction mount but I would expect it to. Price sounds about right.

High Superheat,
Go for the hero three plus, black edition, you will have better sound, extended battery life and a much better wide mode.
From the pov of future proofing, of course they are bound to being a new one out as soon as you get yours :) but the 3 plus handles 4k very nicely.
(I have both a 3 and a three plus btw)
So shop around and you will find a bargain at around £300 you can buy direct from gopro
http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero3-black-edition and they are giving a free chesty, (chest strap), which is very useful and a 32gb micro ad, which have around £70 of value so a good bundle.

The wifi on the three plus hero black edition is great, makes for a completely different experience and gives you far more control, works with android and iOS. If you get the black edition you get a wifi remote wich is useful when you mobile battery is running low...

Only other thing is get a spare battery, you will want one :)

All above IMHO of course, any questions please fire away.

Oh and any version will come with a waterproof case and a non water proof case, (gives better sound).

Regards

Nigel

I'd go further than Nigel and Lisa and suggest that you get at least two extra batteries and a stand-alone charger.

One battery gets you from Cowes to the Needless... and no, that's not sailing.

There are several cheap, non-original options on eBay e.g. Wasabi and/or Expro which both perform as well.

If you scour the Bristol Channel, you may find mine that was attached to my DJI Phantom, that sunk after a catastrophic battery failure, it would have been some good footage of our boats though.

Oh well, next one will float!!!

but definitely go for the GoPro3+.

Trev, in my opinion forget the Go Pro for out pastime, Google or Ebay JVC Adixxion.. you'll be pleasantly surprised and if you like, borrow mine for a day at some point in the season.

cheers

I posted a video on this thread http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?388459-Spottydog-turnsd-into-a-Greyhound-or-a-video-of-realy-boating!

It was taken using A Go Pro 3 which was both handheld and mounted on my Gecko helmet. I also used an camera, a MUVI HD which cost less than half the price of the Go Pro. This was mounted on the A Frame using a clamp device.

The results are here:

This is the MUVI http://www.gaynors.co.uk/products/shop-by-brand/veho/portable-video-cameras-speakers/details/i/14688-47non/n/muvi-hd-1080p-mini-in-caraction-camcorder.aspx?gclid=CPbAwZrI67wCFQfItAodXA8A-g

The Go Pro is smaller and more compact, but the MUVI has the playback screen and is much cheaper and comes with the wireless remote which works well and has a built in replacement battery, where as the Go Pro relies on giving to recharge the remote.

Both cameras come with waterproof cases and the MUVI does have the benefit of a conventional tripod mount where as with the Go Pro you gave to buy the mount.

Which would I chose? Difficult! On purely price and if I was not going to use it that frequently then go for the MUVI . Good quality at a very good price. The Go Pro is more compact and you can buy the 3 Black edition for £249 at places like Sports Pursuits. The 3+ has the benefit of being able to download via wireless but comes at a cost although the eBay price is excellent. There is a rumour that Go Pro is launching a new model, the 4 which is why the earlier 3 model is now on sale.

Lucky to have both the JVC and the gopro, both useful for different tasks

The gopro can be fitted with an exfra battery, in a bigger housing....$49 in the states. ( buy all my gear in the usa so not sure of uk prices). The hero 3+ is $399 however the silver is currently for sale in bestbuy for $235 ....bargain

The gopro is very good for timelapse. The clip below was taken over 2hours, 540 photos stiched together by gopro software, and made into a 37 sec clip. I havnt edited it, and its fairly boring (moving boat and hoist out, but you get the idea)

The JVC is excellent for straight video, non action......really very good.

With the GoPro3+ can you use an external mic ? And also, how does it cope with wind noise ? Is there some sort of muffler available ? required ?

The waterproof case is pretty good for cancelling wind noise but of course you lose sound generally.
This clip at around the second minute shows Breaking Bad going up on the plane into a 15mph head wind and settling at around 20 mph. Should give you an idea:

You can get one of these:

And use a standard external mic with a 3.5m connection but I would try recording sound on your phone and then adding to the video track in generic movie maker of your choice...

Gary,

What different kind of mounts do you get / use with the JVC??

I have one that has a suction to go on the windscreen or map perspex, a cycle mount for the bike and a clamp for the rail on the boat. The good thing about the JVC is it's a standard camera screw fitting so the mounting options are pretty much endless using standard camera mounts

Gary Can you bring it along on Saturday - oh yes please add me +3 + 2 dogs not eating to your list please.

I do like the idea that the Go Pro can be monitored via Wifi onto an ipad. I want to mount a camera in the engine bay for longer trips, that I can view from the Fly, and the Go Pro could offer this. Can the Go Pro be set to monitor but non record mode ?

This may well give me the excuse for SWMBO I need, and I need one soon as I am off for some snorkelling in slightly warmer waters.

The GoPro won't do that. If you want to monitor the engine bay then get a proper camera to do the job. Raymarine camera and link it to your plotter, it is about the same price! GoPro is not designed for that sort of application. The link is not good enough.

One little point about the GoPro (well mine anyway). I have trouble with the housing misting up sometimes so I'd say get some de-mister tabs to go with it. You don't have to buy the gopro ones which are pricey...just take a look on Amazon for available options.

I recently got an alternative called the Camera demon. I started using with my normal digital cam, but also have a waterproof camera which I used by the water... it's only 25 quid so as long as you've got a decent camera, it's well worth it. Only problem is that I think you can only attach to a helmet, so not sure if suitable for everyone.
