We've bitten the bullet and removed the saildrive to replace the diaphragm. This is not the first time but we can't remember which glue we used last time to stick the exterior seal to the hull. The first one wasn't successful but the second one didn't want to let go when we wanted to take the seal off.

The instructions don't specify a particular glue any more, so suggestions would be welcome.

Many thanks.

Don’t the rubber exterior pieces just stick on with glue in a red metal tin with a brush in lid - evostick stuff and then a wall paper roller to roll flat . That’s how I have stuck ours back in past. I’m sure a Chandlery or even B&Q type stores stock it.

The glue on the one we removed looks like some sort of evosticky. The instructions show what looks like a ridged fibreglass roller. We've got one of those.

I used the two-part stuff, I think it's the same glue for repairing PvC dinghies.

I wouldn't worry about the removal challenge. Last time I cut mine off with a heat gun and sharp knife (20 minutes; you could also use an oscillating cutter) then cleaned up the remnants back to gelcoat using a wire brush on an ordinary handheld drill (20 minutes).

Keypart sell two part Bostik 2402 for the seal. I've just bought some from Arco which was cheaper than Keypart's price. It is 'particularly great at bonding rubber'.

I have used a Bison contact adhesive as recommended and admittedly sold by our chandlery. Lasted rather longer than Volvo's recommended diaphragm life.

A two part suitable for rubber is required. Very clean surfaces. Contact type - good suggestions above. . Roller finish
As you appreciate, if the gasket detaches in service, it will clag.....

I used tek7. That was over 2 years ago and the rubber gaitor is still firmly attached.

I used a narrow roller to squeeze out any airbubbles, ensure the adhesive spread evenly, and that it stuck well.

Preperation is key, clean of the old sealant from the Hull, perhaps lightly abrade both Hull and contact surface of the rubber before applying.

I stuck ours on in 2016 with Sikaflex 291 adhesive sealant (great underwater, not so much above). They're still there.

What matters most is the prep. I sanded both the hull and the rubber, then degreased them with acetone. Solid layer of adhesive sealant, slap on, then use a roller or putty knife to press on and squeeze out excess goop. Finally make a nice beveled edge around with your finger so the flowing water can't get a grip on the edge.

You can even apply Coppercoat on the rubber after sanding it! :)
