Does anyone have any experience with using oversize commercial waterproof gloves, with a suitable liner, please ? Easy to take off for switches / opening a beer, etc.

I am looking for a manual system to overcome the tendency of my paws to freeze.

I know that my hero, David Lewis, experimented with the two layer system, but wonder if there is any more recent experience.

TIA

I've got the seal skinzs and they are very good but a tad bulky.

Water proof/breathable Cycling gloves (mine sourced from Aldi at £6.99 IIRC), are really good down to freezing, and compact enough that most tasks can be done with them on (working chart plotter and radio with no problems).

Only shortfall is that they are short on the cuff leaving wrist exposed.

If you want a technical solution: -

He killed the noble Mudjokivis.
Of the skin he made him mittens,
Made them with the fur side inside,
Made them with the skin side outside.
He, to get the warm side inside,
Put the inside skin side outside;
He to get the cold side outside
Put the warm side fur side inside.
That's why he put the fur side inside,
Why he put the skin side outside,
Why he turned them inside outside.

I use the kind of gloves used by people who work in freezers:

Ice work gloves

I bought a pair of these (or similar), and two non-fleece-lined pairs, for less than half of the cost of one pair of Harken / Musto sailing gloves.
Not waterproof but very warm.

I use fingerless gloves(thinsulate, woollen stall holders ones, or sticky palm climbers, what ever is available).
On top, the basic blue Helly Hansen white fleece lined mittens, worn on a elastic tape through my sleeves, just like I had at primary school.
Warm, not 100% waterproof, but windproof and dry pdq.
This combo has kept my hands warm at sea, winter pushbike commuting in Wales and London for a very long time.
The tape means you can whip the mitts off quick to do fine work, and not worry about them going o/b, etc.

The blue Irwin black leather padded work gloves are pretty good too as basic sail/winch work gloves

Buy a £1.99 box of disposable VINYL not latex gloves and wear them under a pair of Gill helmsman's gloves.

This way you can still keep warm when you want to do something fiddly and need to take off the outer layer. The Gills slip off very easily.

Vinyl in preference to latex because they are far more durable.

ah Lady in Bed, if only you felt my hands, cold as paddocks* they be .....

Normally to warm my paws in winter on the farm, I look for an old ewe :o, but my sailing partner is of a sensitive disposition and might not take kindly to the boat's animal complement being further increased.

* a paddock is a toad in Exmoor jargon.
