Gloriana - where to put it...

Needs to go where it will be seen by the greatest number of people and needs to be close to where tourists and visitors to London will be able to see/pay for its upkeep.
Dumping it in some godforsaken featureless urban suburb miles from anywhere with no maritime or Royal history is utterly baffling. Hampton court has got some connections but it miles from central London.

Needs to go St Kats where it will be close to the Tower and just upriver from the Cutty Sark, area visited by millions every year.
They will probably cancel the booking at the last moment however . :)

Near the Churchill boat would be good.

I have some great photos of Gloriana during 2012... We got close to her or on her several times. Must figure out how to post them.

Unfortunately the river was there before the residential properties and there are precious few areas on the Thames that are available for development. The attack of the NIMBYs all over again!!

Anything that celebrates the River Thames and encourages use of the River should be welcomed unequivocally. Tonight somebody posted on our Facebook page that it will impact on their open space and playground so it should be turned down. On the Tideway the PLA protect wharves from development so that they are available to support the river and it's associated activities. Isn't it about time that this was automatically put in place elsewhere on the River? Slipways with parking near them could be a nice starting point!

Ok lets be clear I have lived in both Teddington (where I grew up) and now Twickenham and I cannot tell you how much more the residents of Twickenham embrace the Thames and spend whatever free time they have enjoying the many riverside areas that hey are lucky to have.

There is very little development in this area and they are lucky to have Orleans Park as well as Marble Hill Park as well as Twickenham Riverside. In fact they have been fighting development of the riverside for over 20 years unlike Teddington that bulldozed Toughs and are about to bull doze the studios. Although i cant complain too much about Toughs as I lived in the development for three years!

My point being this project will require significant development in an area that has yet to be development. There is not dry dock there at present it will have to be dug. There is very little parking in and around the area for this so called tourist attraction and its about the darkest place you can find in the borough during winter time which is when this old tub is due to be housed there.

It makes no sense whatsoever to house it here but thats only half the point, the other half is how Lord True and the council have gone about it.

Yes , there was certainly never a royal palace at Richmond , there definately are not two royal parks in the borough , the royal palace at hampton court certainly doesn't exist.

And let's not forget that gunboats were never built at toughs in teddington , nor were warships developed at the NPL in teddington ( and the bouncing bomb ) .

And the Dunkirk little ships were certainly never assembled at teddington

No royal or maritime history in the borough at all.

Parking can be easily managed. I lived just off Kew Green for many years, then close to Twickenham Stadium and also Old Isleworth and from my observations it can be managed.

I suspect that it will only improve the park - seize the initiative, encourage the development provided the park is improved, parking provide, coffee shop upgrade, more playground equipment, better maintenance etc. Surely this is a benefit of the proposal that the "no campaign" can advocate? I always wonder if people consider how "sticking to their guns" comes across? I sometimes think it comes across to other that they are just NIMBY.

Looking at some websites about this last night it would appear that the no campaign say it's not going to be popular and it's not worth it - surely on that basis it won't have a significant impact on the park or car parking?

Unfortunately it just appears to me to be locals shouting to keep their park as it is and keep others out so it strikes me as not a very well thought out campaign I'm afraid.

Perhaps there is more to it but it's eluding me at the moment!

Google Lord True !

with regards to parking the only way you could improve this would be to use part of the park as a car park or extend the already full Marble Hill or Orleans House.

I just cannot see it working there and lets not forget its only going to be there for around six months, mostly in the winter.

The locals DO want it but just not in this exact location which to most is unsuitable.

Imagine what a million quid investment could do do an old boat house on Eel Pie or even the current Hamertons...

Cheers

MTBs were not built at Thorneycrofts in Hampton
Mulberry Harbour caissons were not built at (what is now)Thames Young Mariners
and the area had nothing to do with PLUTO.

Also, Mark Edwards did not build Jubilant for the Silver Jubilee at his premises in Richmond....

Meanwhile, Marble Hill was not built for the mistress of the King...

LOL.

Yea Yea Yea. the bouncing bombs were actually tested at Reculver and have you actually tried to catch a train to Teddington from Central London and as for the delights of changing at Clapham Juction plus the walk from that blimming station to the river.:)

Erm yes ! It's very easy and a direct train !

Direct trains to Waterloo either way round the loop (via Kingston or via Richmond). No need to alight at Clapham at all.

If you want to go somewhere truly god-forsaken change at Waterloo (East) and you can get a train to Kent!

Twickenham to Waterloo takes 20mins. One problem with giving Twickenham a tourist attraction is the Rugby ground. Forget parking on a match day unless you've got a driveway or a permit and any additional parking created would just fill up to the benefit of the stadium.

Is parking a consideration anymore? Or do they only have to provide a cycle superhighway and bike racks?

I'm presuming that you know the bouncing bomb was developed at NPL Teddington and are just being a Merdeway Troll ?

Credit where it's due. He is rather good at it.

+1 for Greenwich, as I'd rather LBRuT spent the money on the ice rink they promised us.

Should have a home built for her at NMM Greenwich.

Spot on ...and the DLR runs from The Tower of London directly to a world famous location full of actual proper maritime history as opposed to a few obsqure minor footnotes known only to the locals :):):)

Indeed but you aint going to row her from there! I agree thats one of two places it should go either there or Henley.

And as for that local place you speak of, well we can talk about that another time! Interestingly when i am on my travels and folk ask me where I am from in London I often say near Hampton Court Place, this is usually met with a blank face....then I say Twickenham the home of Rugby they get it immediately! Perhaps I should say the home of Gloriana....

Good point. Store her at The Stoop :)
