glomax VHF antenna

Does anyone have the installation instructions for a Glomax VHF antenna ? I have had installed a Glomax RA106SLS masthead antenna, but there is something wrong with it. I suspect the connection of the cable to the antenna. I would like to know how the end of the cable should be prepared prior to connecting it to Glomex's solderless plug. The installer has lost the instructions. When I looked at the plug, the end of the centre conductor was just bent over a bit and pushed into the base of the antenna. I'm sure that's not right. Glomex won't answer my emails. Any help much appreciated.

I fitted a Glomex as a spare on the mizzen mast last year. I did not fit the Glomex plug, as I need a joint inside the pillar for the mizzen and used a type N screw connector there. (Or was it a type F?) I fitted the glomex plug to a piece of my own cable, which has a fairly heavy central conductor. The instructions were to strip 6mm of the outer insulator, screen and inner insulator, then strip a further 3mm of the outer insulator, folding the screen back over the outer sheath. The plug is then assembled onto the prepared cable. I don,t think it worked this way and seem to remember taking a longer bit of bare inner to stick into the centre of the plug. I have never tested it unfortunately.

The connection to the centre conductor is made with a tiny pin in the antenna so it is important to use the right coax with a multi strand conductor and cut it exactly as said in the other post here..the centre conductor and insulation are cut flush IE the wire does not stand proud of the centre insulation though both stand proud of the remainder.

Thank you both for your replies. The inner conductor had been stripped of about 12mm of its insulation and then bent backwards. Your answers explain what was wrong and why it seemed to work better when I straightened the inner conductor. I think I have to have another visit to the top of the mast to do it properly.

I think 12 mm is too long.....6 mm rings a bell with the end of core and insulation flush.

I think a washer may be involved with the outer shielding to clamp it within the socket body but may be wrong.

All this sounds like a good reason not to buy Glomex.

glomax antenna connection

To attach the cable to the antenna the cable is passed through the main nut. 12 mm of the plastic cover is removed leaving the screen bare. The screen is cut back leaving 12 mm and the plasic core protuding from the main cover. Peel the screen over the outer cover and screw the thimble over the screen and cable which will leave approx 10-11 mm of the inner insulated core protuding. Trim the remaining insulation back to leaving 5 mm of bare wire, bend this wire tightly over the inner insulation making sure it is isolated from the thimble then insert the assembly into the base of the anttena and secure with main nut. I had no problems with this proceedure and it works fine
