Hi all,

Just had my renewal through and actually cheaper, makes a change. So last year I read through terms thoroughly and all seemed good but just wanted to know of any experience with them and in particular claiming.

Found a thread on here but 19 years ago so was hoping for some more up to date feedback.

Many thanks.

Yes I was with GJW for over 25 years and had two claims with them (one being due to lobster pot damage and the other a break in) and I have to say they were very good and settled both claims fully efficiently.

They asked for quotes for the repairs needed even accepted one for a local boatyard which is a charity renovating old boats as I wanted them to do the woodwork damaged as they had the skills needed which they said ok as long as obtained a receipt .

I claimed from GJW about three years ago when my lift keel boat hit the bottom and damaged the keel. They paid to have it lifted, examined and fixed by the local Beneteau agent. Fast resolution of the claim with no quibbles and very friendly and efficient

Had to claim in April. Can't fault them at all. Completely recommended you stay with them.

I lost my rudder in Inverness in 2014 in a grounding when the Raymarine autopilot failed  ( don't you just love em). They agreed the quote for repairs within 3-4 days, . There was a chance the boat could have been put on a transporter & bought back home & needed a fast response which they agreed in 1 day. Unfortunately my marina could not unload on a Saturday so it was not done.
I only had one quote & they even paid for me to travel home & back ( by hire car one way & the equivalent for my wife to collect me the otherway) while waiting for the work, plus marina fees etc. I had to pay £250 excess as I was single handed but I did not loose my no claims bonus.
What they also did, at my request, was arrange for their surveyor to examine the keel etc., free of charge, when the boat was lifted, at the end of the year, to check that there was no damage, that had not been picked up in Inverness. The chap did quite a detailed examination so it was not just a cursory cheepo job
I am peeved that they cut my unrestricted SH sailing to 18 hours but after some complaining they changed it to 25 hours which gives me about 125 miles with 25 to spare on average trips. They also have increased my cruising area to 5 miles S of La Rochelle.
Forumites might note that Brest does not actually include Camaret , which is just south of Brest & lots of us go to Camaret on a "Brest to Elbe" policy

Blimey, it's not often insurance gets such consistent glowing reviews!
Think you will find this is the same for ALL reputable insurers. Reasons you don't often hear good news is first because the number of people actually making claims is very small, second having good service is not "news" and finally people like to report disputes when you usually only hear one side. It is inevitable that there will be disputes in insurance claims because by their nature some claims are complicated. Disputes usually revolve around basic things like who was liable?, was the claim actually covered by the insurance policy? and is what is being claimed for in line with the policy and the actual incident. On the other hand it is right that insurers investigate and challenge what they see as false claims (even though they may sometimes be wrong) because they pay claims out of other peoples' (including yours and mine) premiums.

I've only ever insured with how and have had two serious claims, both of which were dealt with very competently and speedily. You only really find out if your 'bargain' insurance is really a bargain when you need to claim but I wouldn't insure with anyone else.

I've just looked through their policy and it doesn't include rig failure unless caused by stranding, sinking, fire or impact. They have confirmed that this is the case.
