Just had my quote from GJW (now owned by ripe) gone up from 398 to 520. Same marina, same cover. Someone did hit me this year but as far as I know GJW got that back from the other boats insurance. That’s taking the wotsit in my view

Any thoughts on better cover elsewhere? Royal Clarence Marina, usual south coast, channel cover, 1998 Moody 36

The problem is that answering the question “have you made a claim in the last x years” yes puts premiums up so going elsewhere may not help much. Protected no claims discounts don’t help much either as the base premium that is discounted goes up!

It’s likely that if you’ve been involved in an accident regardless of fault, your premiums will rise.

If by ‘better cover’ you mean ‘cheaper’ then definitely worth shopping around, craftinsure as suggested above is a good start. I’m with Haven Knox Johnson, been competitive year on year with minimal rises, but I’ve not made a claim.

Need to check when comparing quotes that the cover is like for like, ie there are no material differences that you care about. Sometimes the cover is cheap(er) for a reason.

Everything has gone up - I have 8 years NCD now but in November it went up 14% with a note of apology that rates are all up for all insurers.

What is interesting is that HKJ quoted me £400 less (40%) for the same cover but would require a new survey to do so - sadly 4 months after my last £1500 lift out (plus £1200 quoted for the survey) so not worth it until I am next due to lift anyway but every other company who quoted - perhaps 6 or 7 - were within a few quid up or down (literally a pound or two) of my renewal quote.

I have two boats with GJW at the moment, just had a renewal through for one of them at £375, within £20 of last year so not too excited by that.

Although their website is sending me round in a revolving door of logging in again and again trying to update an address typo before i can renew to the point I've given up till another day.

Well I’m with GJW. I’ve also had a claim. My premium increased by £30 or just under 10%. Thought it was good value.

they don’t offer free credit now so paying monthly can increase the cost a fair bit .
