When merchant ships collide....

we usually have a "speed and angle of blow survey" to determine, from the forensic evidence, what both vessels were doing at the moment of impact.

That photo is the clearest such survey that I have ever seen!

ah but this is the morning after and it may be difficult to prove that the port navigation light was working (or faulty depending on who's arguing what) now............

The important thing is to measure the angle of impact to see whether this was an overtaking or crossing situation

Look at the mooring lines. Either the collision happened while one of them was moored, or else they were brought in in that condition. If the latter, steering must have been awkward, particularly on a compass course!
