Girlfriend needing help

When you decide it is the Musto bag that he wants, the bonus item that he will cherish will be a REEDS SKIPPER'S HANDBOOK for sail and power boating -RRP£7.99- but can be had for around £5-6 on Amazon and worth every penny - you see!!

P.S Welcome to the forum!

Trust your instincts!

Charlie - posting here you will get more advice than the human body can stand. So please ues your own judgement in the end.

Regarding the hard case issue; I fully agree with the comments; no serious sailor would be seen dead with anything that would be checked in at Luton airport. It needs to be not too big and soft and ideally well worn. I'd check out any of the main brand bags (without wheels!) - key will be what does he want it for? Weekend sailing, racing crew etc? I like the Henri Lloyd bags, a good chandler will advise if you get the chance to speak to one.

Despite all the knife comments, I would always be happy to recieve a knife. No sailor should be without one. It could one day save his life or a friends. If you get one make sure he gives you sixpence or failing that dinner out at a restaurant of your choice; then you should be ok.

Just to add another thought to the discussion you might want to think about Sea boots - a pair of Dubarry boots would be a great present. They are the best and do what they say on the box. I love mine which were a present!

Good luck

Thanks

Ok, black it is. Sorry about the purple text before.

Thanks for all the advice, I didn't realise there were so many things to consider. I think some of you are right, I will have to ask him so I can get a better idea. Maybe something this size isn't what he wants.

I'll ask him and take it from there.

Thanks again for all your help.

Reading a comment earlier ...

I know someone who only sails on other peoples boats....
Owners seem to be getting wise to him....something of parasite!?

There are however people only too willing to invite people to crew and also advertise as such.
There are crew who not only offer right from the start to pay their way but make added contributions 'over and above' as the trip goes on. Better to offer and be refused than to always take a subsidised/free ride I reckon.

I may be saying something against all the others on here but I have worked out of a bag for several years in the yachting business as a skipper and engineer and one thing I have thought was missing from the market was a large soft bag with a large opening and loads of pockets to separate out clean/dirty clothes. nice gear / boat gear and to wrap all this up in a soft bag that has wheels. I agree that a hard case bag is no good on a boat but the one you have found is not a hard case but is called the clam due to the zip all around the outside like a suitcase style zip. I think it looks perfect for carrying all his gear and easy with the wheels too. I am sure the handles on the ends will make it easy to get on and off boats and being soft it its not full it wont take up any more room than needed. Unlike most of the others here I am capable of googling the bag you mentioned and it can easily be seen it is ideal for the job. I am sure he will love it if you get it in the end.

It is described as a "rigid wheeled base holdall" ! I'd assume rigid means rigid but perhaps that is not so! Perhaps just the base is rigid, or the whole bottom section?

There is a similar, but somewhat smaller, wheeled bag, "The Musto Wheely Bag" Like the above made from 900D polyester but with the base reinforced with PVC. No mention of being rigid.

Gill offer a "Rolling Jumbo Bag" which is the same size as the Musto Clam case but a little less expensive.

I think I would want to look any at these before buying to be sure I knew exactly what I was buying.
Even a rigid based holdall might be difficult on a small boat.

Based on the descriptions alone I would opt for the Gill "Rolling Jumbo Bag" if I wanted a wheeled 110 litre holdall.

Got one and find it awkward because it will not stand up on end when you are using the wheels and handle- a right pain when at check out, coffee bar etc.
I've gone back to using my old shoulder bag Gill bag and my wife's larger Musto shoulder bag. Much more use in MHO for boat work.

PS the best present you could give him is to go with him. olewill

Well said. Ask him if he'll take you sailing for his birthday and then treat him to a nice meal somewhere afterwards and he'll remember it for ages and you'll get lots of brownie points (not that girlies seem to need them for some reason).

Failing that take him Bicester (Helly-Hansen and Musto factory outlets - lot of rubbish but some very good bargains too - think £120 for a £300 set of oilies) or offer to take him to one of the big chandlers. Knives, boots, etc. are all very personal preferences - would you trust him to buy a pair of shoes or a handbag for you without giving him the part number?

I've never bothered with a brand-name hold-all for sailing. If it gets that wet that a normal bag won't keep the moisture out then wet clothes are the least of my worries. I do have a small dry-bag for my wallet, phones, etc. though.
