Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for some advice.

I am looking for a present to buy my boyfriend for his birthday, he is really into sailing but I haven't got a clue so I'm not sure what to get.

I was thinking about getting the Musto clam case as he mentioned something about needing a bag but I couldn't find any reviews as to whether it was any good.

I'm wondering if any of you use this product and whether you can recommend a retailer to buy from. I don't want to go with one company and find that they are useless.

Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
 
First bit of advice ... stick to the black . We oldies have trouble enough reading that without struggling with pale pinks or purples :D

I dont know what the Musto Clam Case is but if that is what he wants, thats what he wants

Musto is one of the top brands ..... with prices to match unfortunately.

Shop around the mail order chandleries for the best price.

I have had excellent service from Force4 but you will have to check prices for youself .. dont overlook the P&P!

One chandlery that gets a regular bad press on here is Marine Megastore at Hamble. Marine Super Store in Port Solent is OK.

I wouldn't have thought the Clam Case is particularly good for sailing (always assuming he wants a bag for sailing) - it's a rigid plastic case with wheels. Better suited to airport travel. However, as Vic says, if that's what he wants then that's what he wants. If he's anything like me he'll have done loads of research and become, temporarily, the UK expert on luggage!

You don't mention that your boyfriend has particularly asked for a clam case? (Haven't seen a Musto Clam Case). Generally sailors need a soft bag, such as a duffle bag or decent sports holdall. It can be stuffed into lockers and awkward shaped places and of course won't scratch decks or floors.
My Musto one has been great but also check the brands Gill, Henri Lloyd, Helly Hanson etc. Also, they usually have a compartment for stuffing wet, damp & smelly clothes into! :)
 
Not sure where you are situated, but there is an excellent Helly Hensen outlet store at Bicester shopping village nr Oxford. This does a good range of sailing apparel and stuff like waterproof bags etc. Also a Musto store, but discounts are not so good.

For a boat a soft bag is much better than a case. Cases take up a lot of room, as there is no loft on a boat. A soft bag is much easier to stow.

The best related gift I bought my sailing girlfriend was a Gerber EZ out safety knife, so much so after many years I have added it to my Christmas list as I am jealous and want one for myself.

If you have not 100% decided on the Musto gear, I would definitely suggest this, unless he has one. I carry a gerber multitool which is great, but I still want a knife of the quality I have suggested, all boating people should carry a knife and I have never seen the EZ out bettered.

The cure for the curse is supposed to be that the recipient pays you for it, ie something like the smallest coin in their posession.

I did this with a sailing female friend, and asked her for a 5p piece.

She did this, knowing the superstition, but we still split up in a bad way.

Of course there is the off-chance I'm just a git; but I wouldn't give someone a knife, for various other reasons too, useful though it is.

I was brainwashed as a kid on superstition to the point I can't help some ludicrous behaviour based upon such. Not giving someone a knife is a brand new one on me. Cripes, I wish you hadn't told me as I know it will settle and I'll start to believe yet another mad superstition, so thanks for that :confused:
 
HERE IS abetter idea for a boat than a case.

A lot cheaper so you will have to give him something else as well .;) ;)

BTW another superstition is not to give anyone a purse, wallet or handbag without putting some money in it. Luckily does not extend to cases and holdalls
 
Sailing gear

A sailor who sails on other people's boats will need good wet weather gear, wet weather boots and gloves and a life jacket with harness attachment. Plus possibly food and drink for himself He will need a bag to carry it all in. You need to find out what he has and what he wants. The better bags have a separate compartment for wet gear.
For my advice new gloves are always welcome (they wear out quickly) But warm gloves (as opposed to sailing gloves) might be good. Of course socks won't go astray. Likewise the multitool type knife and even an LED torch. VicS suggestion of water tight bag is also good. good luck and Happy birthday to your sailor.

I always find backpacks difficult to pass up from the dinghy.

Don't get me wrong I also find them invaluable as a way to carry gear, if you saw me you would understand, but for general boating I prefer hold-alls. I have Musto not because I am a pontoon catwalk type, they were given as gifts from my parents, but I have to say they are bloody well made and the full opening tops make them ideal to live out of. They have been around the world with us (by air) and I wouldn't swap them for anything. The end handles make them ideal to get from dinghy to boat, they are tough and the internals are well laid out with laundry and pockets for telephones and other stuff. When empty they roll up or flatten to disappear under a bunk for example.

I agree with the other poster that the musto clam is not really ideal for life afloat.
