I'm currently looking at going out to Gibraltar with a group of friends to do a Day Skipper Practical course later on in the year.

Gibraltar was chosen as it is tidal, and warm.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which school to use? Stuff to do whilst not sailing etc.

Have a look at Hobo yachting in Southampton, I know Ken and Jenny go out every year with a passage and spend some time in Gib!

Worth calling them.

Hi Simon,

I know a couple of guys who have both done a 'Fast Track' to Yachtmaster with ASA in Gib and then went on to do the Instructors ticket. They both highly recommended the tuition and instructors, particularly Pete.

ASA do pretty much all the RYA courses, Day Skipper included and from what I've heard are reasonably priced...

I second ASA, we did our DS there at easter. As for what to do before/after the course, nosing around Gib itself can quite easily take up a couple of days - there are plenty of english pubs with continental style outside seating to visit.

I believe Straits sailing is the other well recommended company in the area but I have no experience of them.

Can thoroughly recommend Gibraltar for courses, Tidal, generally good weather and you can cross to Africa. I went to Straits sailing, Colin writes the almanac for the straits. Can recommend them but have heard good reports on the others as well.

We made a 9 day holiday of it , cheap flight to Spain bus or train transfers and Colin arranged B& B for us on the days outside the course.

I'm doing coastal skipper with Trafalgar 9th April- so i won't be of help till then, but if you end up going that week let's have a drink!
