Hi everyone.

The previous owner of my boat has stained the rubbing strake a very dark woodstain. This has sanded off easily.

However, they also painted woodstain around the edge of the grp channel next to it, which is about 2 inches wide. It looks horrible!

I have tried acetone and panel wipe, and it is very difficult to get off. I was hoping that someone might know of something else I can try, that won't risk the gelcoat.

Thanks in advance!

Carl

I had a similar problem having been a little messy with some Deks Olje on my kitchen worktop. I found that the Fairy Liquid pre-soaking stuff was more effective than anything else. Of course, this is just an undiluted detergent so there may be many commercial cleaning fluids which would achieve the same result if used undiluted. It does completely degrease the surface, which looks like damage immediately after cleaning, but the normal sheen is restored fairly quickly once the surface picks up some grease!

Rob,

Thanks for that. I will give it a go. There are also splatters all over the boat, and I have scrubbed them with acetone, but they just don't shift! It really makes the boat look terrible.

It is a really boring subject, so again, thanks for your reply!

Tried a caustic soda based paint remover?

Hi Carl

Try Owatrol Paint Remover http://www.marinechandlery.com/owatrol-marine-strip-paints-and-coatings-remover

No it's not cheap but it does what it says on the can, I suggest you paint it on and leave it for say 4 hours min, you then best jet wash or hose it off, 'if' it leaves a faint outline then use 'T' cut on the GRP, .

I have used it to remove a boats gloss painted on name before and horrible gloss painted boot topping and it does NOT damage GRP !
