An innocent message on an Athens metro link diverted to a not entirely balanced clash of views on getting to Preveza from the UK.
To balance the knowledge base I would like to observe that there are a number of ways of getting to the above, none of which are particularly simple.
The most obvious is to fly to Preveza airport itself - most flights are charter run by either Monarch or Thomson and, as a result are not certain to have vacancies when required. One advantage is that destinations are not confined to the S of England (there are many who don't live there) including Manchester, Birmingham and Teeside. fares tend to be expensive, between £200-400, on my last enquiry, and there are no flights in the winter.
The alternative is to fly to Corfu, catch a ferry to Igoumenitsa and then bus (or taxi) to Preveza. There are expensive flights from LHR (about £150, via Athens) or Easyjet fly from Gatwick and Luton, 2 flights daily costing between £32-£80.
The problem is then finding a ferry to get one to Igoumenitsa. All the scheduled services have left, before any of the flights have touched down, leaving the more erratic "open" passenger-only ferries.
Unfortunately when one arrives in Igoumenitsa it is unlikely that any buses for onward transport for the 110km, are left - so one hires a car, books a taxi or takes an hotel. This tends to make the Corfu option slow and expensive.
Finally, the one I suspect most settle for, fly to Athens, then get the bus to Preveza. Easyjet fly Gatwick or Luton, total 3 flights/day, BA 4 flights/day, Olympic 4 flights/day - fares from £25 - £ 180, 3 buses daily taking 4:30 - 6:00 hrs cost €32.80, plus navette from the airport.
If there are any other reasonable cost-methods (an executive jet to Preveza is totally feasible for those with deep enough pockets). I'd be glad to have any rational additions or amendments.
