An innocent message on an Athens metro link diverted to a not entirely balanced clash of views on getting to Preveza from the UK.

To balance the knowledge base I would like to observe that there are a number of ways of getting to the above, none of which are particularly simple.

The most obvious is to fly to Preveza airport itself - most flights are charter run by either Monarch or Thomson and, as a result are not certain to have vacancies when required. One advantage is that destinations are not confined to the S of England (there are many who don't live there) including Manchester, Birmingham and Teeside. fares tend to be expensive, between £200-400, on my last enquiry, and there are no flights in the winter.

The alternative is to fly to Corfu, catch a ferry to Igoumenitsa and then bus (or taxi) to Preveza. There are expensive flights from LHR (about £150, via Athens) or Easyjet fly from Gatwick and Luton, 2 flights daily costing between £32-£80.
The problem is then finding a ferry to get one to Igoumenitsa. All the scheduled services have left, before any of the flights have touched down, leaving the more erratic "open" passenger-only ferries.
Unfortunately when one arrives in Igoumenitsa it is unlikely that any buses for onward transport for the 110km, are left - so one hires a car, books a taxi or takes an hotel. This tends to make the Corfu option slow and expensive.

Finally, the one I suspect most settle for, fly to Athens, then get the bus to Preveza. Easyjet fly Gatwick or Luton, total 3 flights/day, BA 4 flights/day, Olympic 4 flights/day - fares from £25 - £ 180, 3 buses daily taking 4:30 - 6:00 hrs cost €32.80, plus navette from the airport.

If there are any other reasonable cost-methods (an executive jet to Preveza is totally feasible for those with deep enough pockets). I'd be glad to have any rational additions or amendments.

To and from Preveza

Hi Charles
You probably know that the seaplane from Lefkas - Corfu went belly up last year but did you know about the Olympic shuttle from PVK to Corfu? It runs 2/3 times a week at 35 euro each way. I havent figured out how to link it up with our flights for next year but we used it to get back via Corfu a couple of weeks ago.(BTW it was full)
Ive also used the direct charter to PVK & Easyjet or Olympic to Athens then cropduster to PVK or drive routes a few times but have so far steered clear of Igoumenitsa because of uncertainty over how to book and connect with the ferries.
Incidentally, I once saw a British Midland plane in PVK and I got exited about the prospect of a scheduled service but it turned out to be a charter.
Will watch the thread with interest - there just isnt an easy and reliable way to and from Preveza is there !

Stung into doing the detailed research

I've worked out that Olympic do a reasonable flight from Preveza - Athens - LHR on Wednesdays. This requires only a 2:40 hours stopover in Athens. Total travel time is 8:05hrs and cost is €157. There are connections on 3 days in the week, but on the other two days it requires, literally, an overnight stop.

The alternative, bus to Athens- navette to airport (or metro) has a total travel time of 9:40 and a total cost (via Easyjet) of €79.79. It also has the advantage of availability 6/7 days.

I think I know which one I'll be taking - as an OAP money is more significant than time.

I've left the Kerkyra alternative out as, IMHO, it's misleading.

Pity about the seaplane, I was talking to a girl in Levkas town, in early April, who was hoping it would be flying, as she had a job in their booking office.

I have done bus Preveza to Athens. 6:30 ( including Aktio to bus station preveza ) Bus Athens to Airport (1:10 ). Then Athens Stanstead by Aegean airlines (3:45 plus waiting time of 3:00) . The train to London ( 0:45 ) , taxi across London ( to catch the last train ) ( 0:30 ) and then Train to Tunbridge Wells ( 1:05), wife picked me up from the station, ( 0:20 ) The UK 'leg' cost as much as the flight and Greek buses put together. A full day travelling, never, ever again!

Alternatively. 4 people in a Ford Galaxy. Ferry to Calais or Dunkirk . 900 miles to Venice ( total time 18- 20 hours) . 24 hours relaxing on ferry Venice to Igo and then an hour to Preveza. Not cheap but you then have the vehicle down there for the season.

BTW i have had Preveza tickets from Gatwick for €220 return.

Sorry to go round again but having read most of the comments on Corfu/Prevesa travel options can anyone update on the times of the ferries out of Corfu to Igoumanitsa and times of the bus from Igoumanitsa to Prevesa. I fly into Corfu at 11 am, will this be a problem?Any up to date info would be extremely welcome

From my research, you'll be unlikely to make it to the scheduled ships in time, they all sail in the morning.

However this might give you some hint - what goes up has to come down!!

Igoumenitsa - Corfu Town
Duration: open ferry 1-¾ hr, close ferry 1 hour
Schedule: every day per hour between 5.15am and 10pm

Trying to find precise times of the open ferries is impossible on the internet, but if you turn up you'll probably be able to find out.

As to buses K-Tel have suspended their website and only give chargeable info in Greek on the phone.
I'd reckon that the only safe transport would be a taxi.
From this forum I gathered that there's only 1 bus to Lefkada @10:30, which is probably also the bus to Preveza.

I see Aegean is going to start flying Heathrow / Athens starting October 25. Flights from Athens depart daily at 09:10 & 17:20 . Flights from London Heathrow depart daily at 12:45 & 20:20.

Late night Thursday flight arriving 2:00 in Athens £39

bus service

interesting to note the bus from lefkas/athens is now 30min quicker, at 5hours as the agrinio by pass is open. the 0700 bus from lefkas E32 is in kiffissia just on 1200.the 93 bus about an hour to the airport for E 3.20 or taxi for E 29.in half an hour. The prevessa bus used to be 30 min quicker than the lefkas bus due to the better road through arta.not sure if this uses the bypass now.

One of the problems with Aegean is that they're one of those naughty airlines who quote prices without taxes - invariably the true cost is higher. The arch-villain is, of course, Michael O'Really, who has, I note, had to change the more extreme of his practices.

No: stops end of october

Recently bought Olympic flight Preveza-Athens-LHR for £126 inc taxes. Total alleged duration under 9 hours, civilised departure and arrival times. Not sure it'll be available midwinter, though.

Sorry if I'm teaching Granma, but I assume you're all aware of Satellite travel for summer flights? They consolidate most of the charter company's empties . . . http://www.satellitetravel.co.uk/PrevezaAirport.aspx

Thanks for the site reference, saves a lot of hunting, but the prices do seem exorbitantly high - eg £520 for 2 return in Sept.

I reckon scheduled flights, and taking a reasonably long view give far more economical results.

Yes, the prices are high at the moment because suddenly (after UK wet weather) there's a serous rush for the few remaining holidays for sale, so they'll only release flights at full holiday prices. Earlier this year (late May and Aug bank holiday Sunday) there were one ways going for £70 at less than 6 days notice.

For short notice flights, it's always worth checking these out first, before going to the regulars via Athens. Discount mania rules if there's over-capacity. Also, there are always cheap flights going to UK in the early season (the empty leg returns of first departures from UK) and vice versa in late season. There are also empty legs to UK in late June (as capacity builds up) and to Preveza at the end of August (if capacity is being reduced - which it usually is). So, if you're going against the flow of holiday traffic, you'll win out.

ferries run to Igoumenitsa all through the day and early evening -- not sure how late they run but you`ll have no problem landing at 11.00am
We always hire a one way car from Igou and leave it at the Europcar office in Levkas cheaper than a taxi and you can use it for a trip to Lidals for cheap booze as well.
We go to the Europcar desk in Corfu airport and they ring across to the Igoumenitsa office and tell them we are on our way. The office in Igou is just opposirte the ferry arrival so no problem there either.

I had to do it from a charter flight that was diverted from Preveza to Kefalonia when Preveza airport was closed by a crashed Nato AWAC!! It took a very long time and I only arrived in Preveza marine in the early hours with a zombie kamikaze taxi driver. Can't recommend it, the Corfu route must be shorter.
