You may find a chemical called Methyl Ethyl Ketone will help.

It won't damage the paint after you have removed the stickers and will take all the tack off and leave it free of any residue. Wear a decent filter mask if using indoors though.

Use it at work to take old hyd oil off and it is brilliant stuff.

You speak as a man who has a POL locker he can go to to get it whenever he needs it. I thought they were going to call the police when I asked for some in a Pharmacy. Maplin's and various builder's merchants, etc. were no help either. Anyone know what the rules around obtaining and using MEK are for us poor civvies....

I've only read a few of the posts so I hope I'm not repeating anything.
I removed the name and a stripe from my boat. I started using a hot air gun and a scraper with a Stanley blade designed to take paint from glass etc. After a while I realised that I didn't need the hot air gun. Without heat the stripe came off at walking pace.

Printers use MEK in large quantities for cleaning ink rollers. You can also source MEK from plumber's merchants - it's used for cleaning solvent-weld PVC/ABS pipes & fittings.
Wickes stock it, and you can also buy it on Ebay ...

Spray it with WD-40 while it is in the sun. After 20 minutes or so, fish the letters out of the water.

Of course, it all depends upon the glue that was used. But WD-40 works for some.
