Replaced some of the more minor bits of running rigging with nice shiny 3-strand pre-stretched polyester. I've managed to make passable eye-splices and back-splices, but they don't look nearly so symmetric as the old ones which were done, presumably. by a rigger. I looked at "Knots and Splices" an A5 landscape shaped book, but found its explanations hard to follow, and dubious - when I tried to tie the crown knot illustrated before starting the back splice, it fell apart as it was tightened.

So, given that there are a couple of dozen books around which claim to teach you "in easy to follow steps, with clear illustrations" how to tie knots and make splices, has anyone got a recommendation for a good primer on splicing? Or does any institution offer classes (hint - I draw the line at joining the RN!)

This is one of these things that I will get round to one day so can't recommend any books just yet.

However, I still have (from 1977) a key fob which has a Turks head out of a few inches multibraid, done in three separate colours. I bought it from my pal in the army when we were at Kiel, he used to make em between brew ups, absolute works of art.

So what..... well his name is Stokey Woodall, he lives down your neck of the woods and he wrote a book about his sailing life so look him up and he will tell you what you need to do/go to etc etc.

Rather like so many other things in life, I've found the only 'real' answer is to have someone show you - and then show you where it's going wrong. I was lucky - my old man was a professional sailorman and I was interested enough to learn from him.

As for books/publications - I'd start with the free ones. As Marlow make so much of the string we play with why not try http://www.marlowropes.com/yachting/downloads/splicing_document.pdf.

Many of the books cover bends and hitches as well as other rope work, and as such many pages may represent a wasted investment

free sheet

marlow ropes do a free sheet with diagrams of splices.

forget back splices 'the lazy man's whipping'.

eye splices look best if you reduce the strands by 1/3 after the third row of tucks and another third after the 4th row. cut the strands with a hot knife.

i have to agree with previous.
there is no substitute for someone over your shoulder.
i am too cak handed to do a really good splice altho we did a lot of practice during sailing trips with the naval cadets.mine were always a bit lumpy and uneven.
i hasve tried all sorts of knot books but soon get tied up

Quite rite

Even though you've got a really old boat (are'nt you worried it'll sink when you set sail?) you've still got a bit of common sense. The Bavaria is a much better boat than the Beneteau. I should know because we've got one and its really good. Its built by germans, you know! They built things like the Bismark so they really know their stuff. You can come and test sail mine if you want, just semnd me a PM.
