Can any one help?

Just had a call from a guy who has come over here from Australia (before you ask............British girlfriend!)

It seems he was qualified up to his armpits in Australia with all sorts of commercial tickets, he had been running/skippering a sport fishing "mother boat" with dories running off it. He wants to get work in this country on some sort of boat, maybe tourist trips, Rib Rides?

His question is can he just get a British stamp on his qualies? Do they transfer? Will he have to take them again. My Initial suggestion was go on a two day advanced PB course with associated VHF, etc. If he is as good as he says it won't take him long and will avoid any future problems.

Anyone have any experience of this? He seems to be getting bounced all over the place with no real progress.

As far as I am aware old mate should have done an international endorsement on his existing qualification before leaving Oz, usually here in Tasmania, home of the Australian Maritime College, which is what other skippers do before heading off to the Med or Caribbean.

Not sure if RYA is the same as MCA but for the MCA STCW95 he should be able to get a Certificate of Equivalency. For example I have a Singaporean ticket somewhere although I have only ever sat UK exams. He should be able to fill out the form from the MCA and send it away with all his Ausy tickets and if they think they are up to scratch they issue a C of Eq. Whether or not the RYA runs a similar scheme or not I don't know?
