I've been looking at a fairly cheapish plotter. They seem too good to be true for the price. Has anybody seen/used these things. They look just the thing for the cockpit of my boat or are they a waste of time

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

How cheap is cheap? I bought a Raymarine 425 plotter this year which retails around £420. Excellent bit of kit. Takes Navionics charts (which I think the Geonavs do as well.)

Their selling a Geonav 5 down at port solent, where ever that is, for £199. It sounds A, either bargain of the century or B. A total waste of time. They take Nav-chart cartography, what ever that is. Just thought I'd throw it open to the panel to see if the opinions justified a drive down there.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Navcharts are a bit crappo. They're like jpeg scans of paper charts. Why not buy my mint Magellan Nav6000 hand held, which takes proper CMaps, for £395 including a Cmap of the Solent. I'm selling it to buy the new Garmin colour 176c handheld. For £420 I'll throw in CMaps of Sydney Harbour or Carribee. The Nav6000 is like this......

Agree, the MESltd offer is excellent value. But the 175 is in run off, it's the old kit that only takes the old raster scan G charts, quite different from the new 176 or indeed the Nav6000 which take proper vector charts that are much better than raster scan

I bought the Geonav 5, sold it with the boat now, its a bit basic ie only five waypoints and one route, but the graphics are pretty good. Its got loads of features, overall, for £199 plus £125 for the cartridge I'm quite impressed. I used to use it on the lower helm.
